Contributed by Darren Pennington,
HOW much of our valuable time is spent sifting through the multitude of choices when buying a product or service? Whether it’s a major purchase like a home or car, or a more mundane acquisition like milk or bread, the range on offer can be mind numbing.
Of course when you’re choosing a car you can significantly reduce the field by eliminating the two-door, the four-door or the people mover in line with your requirements.
You can then strike out either the four- or the six-cylinder model, rule out the iridescent pink or canary yellow, perhaps forgo the rear window venetians and so on until you arrive at the vehicle that best suits your needs.
But wait, there’s more! Now you need to choose a supplier… more choices.
Choosing investment products is not dissimilar. The range can be narrowed according to your circumstances and goals, some are more attractive than others because of various risk and reward factors, terms can be short, medium or long and of course tax implications can’t be ignored. Even when the range of products is honed to a short-list, how will you choose your supplier?
You can put a supplier to the acid test in terms of their product range and fees. You can make a choice based on the shine of their shoes, their brand of wristwatch or perhaps the promise of a free widget will influence you… but could there be ongoing benefits in doing business with a particular supplier?
