BUDGIES make the clock stop for Gerry Pigot.
Gerry, one of the organisers of a budgerigar show and information day held at Badger Creek, has been breeding budgies for 14 years.
“If you want something to help you escape life for an hour or two, breeding budgies is a great hobby,” he said.
And, it seems a lot of people agree with him.
“We had a great turn-up, despite the cold and rainy weather and have the names of 25 people who have said they are interested in forming a local club,” Gerry said.
He said breeding is not difficult but requires good housekeeping skills.
“We breed selectively for size and deportment and the result is a bird which has a bigger face, lots more feathers and which looks proud on the perch.
“The care of the bird is the most important part and the fun is in breeding a better bird yourself.”
The level of involvement can vary from just a few birds displayed at club level to competition at major shows.
A meeting scheduled for Monday (16 October) was planned as the first step towards forming a local budgerigar club.
Anybody interested in finding out more about breeding budgerigars, being part of a new club, or looking for information on as pets can contact Gerry on 0419 591 617.
