REGIONAL environment group The Central Highlands Alliance (TCHA) has applauded the State Government’s new Moving Forward package unveiled last week.
The $502 million package, which includes substantial investment in nature based tourism, gas pipeline schemes, and $38 million in public transport, is aimed at provincial Victorian communities.
TCHA president Sarah Rees said the package could strengthen regional economies and communities.
“(The package) could unlock the potential for massive growth in nature based tourism, new skill training and build successful public transport pathways to allow us to play our part in the battle against climate change,” she said.
“The package describes enormous growth in the viticulture industry, a 30 per cent increase in the tourism sector and new job growth in plantations and private forestry.”
Ms Rees said she believes the package could provide the funds for an internationally recognised Highlands walking track. “We believe our community could embrace sustainable tourism frameworks that complement our ecology and have been shown to deliver good financial rewards for the townships that survive off them,” she said.
