State urged to pay for bypass

By Melissa Donchi
THE Brumby Government should produce its promised $9 million for the Yarra Glen bypass now, according to the Federal Government.
Transport Minister Jim Lloyd was in Yarra Glen last week to renew pressure on the State Government to come up with the funds after they were promised last November.
But so far the State Government has given no indication of when they will commit their share of the money.
“It’s pretty obvious this bypass would make a big difference to the town but unfortunately we’re still waiting on the State Government,” Mr Lloyd said.
McEwen MP Fran Bailey and Yarra Glen Chamber of Commerce President Marjorie Woolands were also present to make their feelings about the bypass known.
“Yarra Glen is becoming a tourist hub and is attracting more people and businesses,” Ms Bailey said. “Big roaring trucks don’t really fit into that picture.”
But Seymour MP Ben Hardman said despite the lack of funds the State Government was still committed to the project.
“VicRoads has commenced the planning processes and is in discussions with DSE to ascertain whether an environmental effects statement is required,” Mr Hardman said.
“Now that the Federal Government has finally come to the table with their cheque, the State Government can now get on with the job.”
But that may take awhile with Shire of Yarra Ranges confirming that the plans were still in the preliminary stages.
“VicRoads is scoping the project,” a shire spokesperson confirmed.
