THE 2007 golf season opened at Warburton Golf and Sporting Club on Saturday with a Flag Trophy and Monthly Medal competitions and the first qualifying round of the Jack Coulson Summer Cup.
The Jack Coulson Summer Cup is played in three grades. The eight players with the best gross scores in each grade over two qualifying stroke rounds then play off in a knockout matchplay competition over the next couple of months.
Jack Coulson, a life member of the club, who contributed as treasurer, secretary and president of the club over many years in the 1970s, lives in Hoddles Creek.
His membership and contribution to the club is celebrated each year with the Honour Board event.
“On Saturday, the contest was very even with the top eight players in each grade within 10 shots of one another,” club captain Mike Dobson reported.
Joint leaders in A grade were Clint Smallman and Paul Creighton, each on 72.
The Flag Trophy event was won by Noel Cross, who carried the flag to the 19th green, only a metre from the hole.
Four players, Smallman, Danny Fox, Cross and Paul Smith, finished with net scores of 66 and will play off for the monthly medal next week.
