SATURDAY provided mixed results for cricket in the Yarra Valley.
The much-needed steady rain had its effect on many matches from minor interruptions to completely washing out the day’s play at some venues.
In the DJSS, the Warburton-Millgrove and Coldstream match had no play.
Mt Evelyn hosting Wandin were 1 for 116 when rain caused the end of play.
At Yarra Junction the home side batted first and reached 182 all out. When stumps were drawn Dan Lever 63, Silvan’s Stuart Reynolds had the best figures with 3 for 52.
No play was possible after tea at Seville which leaves Woori Yallock to resume their innings at 2 for 89 still with another 48 overs of the possible 80 next Saturday.
Seville’s Gary Quilty grabbed both the wickets to fall while Tim Diggins is undefeated on 41 for the Tigers.
No scores were received for the Yarra Panthers versus Healesville match.
In RAFT 2, Powelltown made an impressive total of 416 all out on a fast Wickhams Road oval with not one century in that score although Chris Neale came tantalisingly close with 99.
He was well supported by McRorie 74, Paxton 71 and White 52
In other news, Warburton and Yarra Valley’s Jason Coghlan won the best player award for the Keith Mitchell Shield in the U12 VMCU Cricket week competition.
Coghlan was presented with the award at Chelsworth Park in Ivanhoe on Sunday during the U12 Shield final.
The YVCA thanks all the players, coaches, parents and helpers and sponsors L.J. Hooker Healesville and Yarra Junction and to Seville Fresh Fruit for their kind and generous assistance in putting these sides on to the field.
The Victorian Country Cricket League of which the YVCA is an affiliate won the Australian Country titles in Mildura last week.
These national titles are the highest level for country cricket and the Victorian team was extremely pleased to bring home the cup for only the third time in 23 years of the event.
With two of those triumphs coming in the past four years we are now looking for another good showing in 2008 in Mackay, Queensland.
