IT was the start of round six in the Yarra Valley Cricket Association on Saturday with teams looking to win and get a clear break over others in their grade.
In the D.J. Strachan Shield, Yarra Junction travelled to Wandin and batted first. They were dismissed for 211 as Geoff Fall 34 not out, M. Cliff 35 top scored while Gary Frankovic 4/47 and Wayne Ross 3/48 were Wandin’s leading bowlers on a very warm Saturday.
Silvan travelled the Maroondah Highway to Queens Park, Healesville, and had first use of the wicket.
But it proved a somewhat disappointing effort as they were all out for just 102 runs, Rob Dipietrantonio 28 not out and Mark Appleby 23. Healesville’s Alan Pearce took 4/26 and Julian Russell 3/15.
In reply, Healesville are 1/50 (Ben Slater 28 no) at stumps.
Mount Evelyn hosted Coldstream with the visitors batting first and reaching 9/240cc at stumps.
B. Wheeler 50, Brent Summers 47, Liam Doughty 45 were top scorers for Coldstream, while Chris Anderson 3/57, I. Llewellyn 2/33, Justin Fellows 2/46 were best for Mount Evelyn.
Seville travelled to Ringwood to play the Yarra Panthers and batted first but were dismissed for 164 (Dean Troyaan 36, Matt Sondergeld 33).
Ross Fernando led the Panthers attack taking 4/37 and was well supported by Michael WiIliams with 3/36.
In reply at stumps the Yarra Panthers were 2/114 (Tom Derham 42no, J. Koole 37, Rob Henderson 2/41).
Woori Yallock was looking for a good score this week against old foes Warburton-Millgrove but were all out for 198.
Andrew Sharpe made a good score of 70 and was ably assisted by Michael King with 40. Mick Walker was in good form with the ball taking 4/47 and D. Haggar 4/33, Cameron Darwall 2/46.
Warburton-Millgrove will bat from the start of play next week.
In the R. A. Finger Trophy, Seville hosted Launching Place United and were all out for just 118, Jason Goss 37, Andrew Hoare 4/26.
Launching Place United is 0/33 in reply with Rod Norman 22*.
Wandin were all out for just 70 runs (B. Mason 22) as Beau Hawkins 4/18, Toby Pilton 2/12, and Josh Nightingale 2/7 bowled well for Yarra Junction.
In reply, Junction were in a spot of bother at 5/62 at stumps with Beau Hawkins 20, J. Wright 3/7, Simon Young 2/19.
A couple of early wickets and Wandin could roll them or even work on a reverse outright should the Eagles just manage to get past the score.
Mount Evelyn were all out for 60 (Brad Darvell 31, R. Gibson 7/19) against Gruyere District, who then batted and declared at 3/79 (D. Hodgkinson 25, Brett Young 20*, Paul Ortu 2/16).
In the second innings, Mount Evelyn is 4/98 (Chris Doyle 41, Matt Tilney 3/24).
Healesville meandered up to Hoddles Creek and batted first but managed only 159 (Will Maile 38, Jeff Crew 3/31) and at stumps in reply Hoddles Creek are 0/16.
The YVCA Under 14 and 16 squads have been in training for a few weeks now but from next weekend the Under 12 will also commence training at Healesville.
The Junior Country Week will be played locally and around metro Melbourne from January 7. The Yarra Valley Cricket Association will enter one side in each age group.
