Spirited start to round

By Keith Thompson
WITH the start of round six on Saturday, Yarra Valley Cricket Association was pleased to see a lot of cricket played in great conditions and with plenty of spirit.
Strachan Shield matches saw Silvan with a rather large score of 5/301 with Gary Frankovic making a wonderfully compiled 174 against Yarra Junction whose best bowler was Stephen Flutter with 3/92.
Wandin having dismissed Warburton Millgrove for just 96 with coach Ross taking 5/39 are 3/36 with Jason Kennedy 27. This should prove to be a close match. Liam Barnard on 25 was best for Warburton/Millgrove.
Seville at stumps reached 9/297 with Michael Dicello 95 not out, Tim Dwyer 40, Craig Atkins 35. For Yarra Panthers Rob Williams took 2/46.
Coldstream 138, Vaughan Wheeler 50 not out, Scott Reece 30, Liam Doughty 33 and Healesville’s Darren Edwards 4/40, Alan Pearce 3/20. With a 13 over opening spell Alan Pearce kept the Coldstream bats to a slow start.
There was excellent fielding from most of the Healesville team, led by keeper Aaron Violi with four catches. This match should have a great finish next weekend. Healesville at stumps were 1 for 9 when bad light stopped play.
Woori Yallock batting first against Mt Evelyn reached 189 with Julian Smith 75, Brad King 31, Chris Anderson 3/36, Jon Dalton 3/42.
The Finger Trophy grade games on day one are Kinglake 196 with Ken Sherring 65, Bren Styles 34, Aubrey Bryan 3/36 and J Tanner 4/43. This would have been a reasonable position for Launching Place but alas that was not to be as, with Brenton Styles taking 5 for 6 and Ben Munn-Gibbs 3 for 9, Launching Place were in trouble at 8/15 at stumps.
Powelltown’s first innings 61 with Matt Tilney 9/26, second innings 5/16 with Matt Tilney 4/10. But when Gruyere District batted they did not fare much better being dismissed for just 91 – Luke Sarre 25, Brad Green 4/41 and Chris Neale 3/38.
Aura Vale 239 with Nathan Phillips 76, J. Busary 52, B. Derix 3/46, Jessie Ridd 3/5 played Hoddles Creek
Yarra Glen 122 with James Campion 32 not out, Jason Harrow 5/38 played Marysville 58 all out and 4/14, James Campion 5/3 and 2/3.
One could only say that in Finger Trophy it was certainly a bowlers’ day.
The YVCA Night Competition will start in a couple of weeks at Coldstream. There will be more details in the coming weeks.
