FOR Liz Bennett, going solo as a woodwind teacher is an exciting new challenge.
Ms Bennett retired from her role as director of music at Upper Yarra Secondary College in December after 20 years of teaching and directing the music program there.
One of the outstanding features of the school over many years has been the quality of its music program.
A qualified teacher, she gained her diploma of music at Melbourne University and specialises in teaching flute, clarinet and saxophone.
She is now teaching from her home studio in the Yarra Valley offering private lessons to aspiring musicians of all ages and abilities.
Lessons are tailored to give each student the opportunity to reach their potential and be successful.
“I believe in setting a high standard of the skills required for success on the instrument, but music must also be fun. It must be enjoyed,” Ms Bennett said.
“My students will learn the style they enjoy but will also have a firm foundation laid to enable them to develop any style they wish to explore later,” she added.
As a teacher with two decades of experience behind her and a contemporary of the formal music education system, Ms Bennett is completely familiar with all the requirements for formal exams including AMEB and VCE.
Students also have the opportunity to join an ensemble so they can share the experience and fun of playing together.
