Class out for Africa

By Melissa Meehan
KINGLAKE West Primary students didn’t let the rain dampen their enthusiasm during their African Day that celebrated the book launch of Man Eater by Justin D’Ath.
Along with Mr D’Ath, Chris Banks from Melbourne Zoo, Seymour MP Ben Hardman, Lisa Riley from Penguin Books and Melbourne singer-songwriter Ruth Rogers-Wright visited the school to take part in the colourful event.
Reading recovery teacher Chris Brandon said that everyone who attended commented on how great the school looked and at the buzz that was in the air.
“The children had a fantastic day,” Ms Brandon said.
“They participated in some excellent craft activities, making beautiful bead collars and drums.”
Students were also given the opportunity to take part in a singing workshop conducted by Ruth Rogers-Wright.
Ms Rogers-Wright taught them a three part African chant that was later performed by students at the book launch.
“We were really impressed with what the children learnt in such a short period of time.
“The sounds and rhythms they produced were brilliant!” Ms Brandon said.
Students were provided with lunch on the day with an African twist consisting of couscous, Tanzanian beef soup, banana and chicken curry soup and braised cabbage.
Those who were not so adventurous enjoyed a sausage sizzle and fruit salad.
After lunch the King Marong and Kuukuah group performed vibrant songs and dances of West Africa.
Mr D’Ath joined students dancing to the sounds of King Marong at the back of the Kinglake West Hall.
Ms Brandon said that Mr D’Ath commented that he loved the painted faces of the children and applauded parents, teachers and students for their efforts to make the day such a huge success.
