HEALESVILLE’S Worawa Aboriginal College will host one of the Federal Government’s latest Green Corps projects to engage young people in environmental repair work.
The Worawa College project, in partnership with Greening Australia, will involve 10 young people between the ages of 17 and 21.
The participants will create several new environmental features in the college vicinity, including a Dreaming trail, a 30-metre-wide corridor of new bushland and a bush tucker garden.
About five kilometres of fencing will be replaced and 15,000 trees planted, with a future opportunity for the community to become involved in tree planting around the college.
Several weeks’ work with groups, including local wineries and the Lilydale-Warburton rail trail committee, as well as one week’s work placement, will broaden participants’ experience.
McEwen MP Fran Bailey announced funding for the Green Corps project last week, and said it would provide valuable work experience for the participants.
“These young people are among hundreds around Australia volunteering to join the Australian Government Green Corps, fixing our natural surrounds and giving young Australians a taste for environmental repair work,” she said.
Ms Bailey said more than 15,000 young Australians had participated in the program since it began in 1997.
She encouraged young people in the Yarra Valley to investigate the benefits of joining Green Corps for a six-month placement.
“Green Corps offers improved career and employment prospects through accredited training, work experience and personal development opportunities,” she said.
“Green Corps participants receive an allowance of up to $390 each week.”
