COMPLETING a pre-trip vehicle checklist may mean the difference between life and death.
RACV spokesman Michael Case said the check might sound like an onerous task, but ensuring the vehicle was prepared for the summer weather conditions could reduce the risks of summer travelling.
“Boxes that must be ticked include fluid levels, radiator and cooling system, battery, service and tune, tyres and brakes,” he said.
“It doesn’t matter whether you own a 1967 HR Holden or the latest BMW, the fundamentals for safety are the same.”
Mr Case said vehicle handbooks were the best resource for basic checks, but recommended motorists consult a professional if in doubt.
He said even simple tasks such as replacing windscreen wiper blades and topping up the windscreen wiper washer bottle were vital for safe driving, ensuring windscreens were clean to maximise vision.
RACV research indicated tyres were often neglected, Mr Case said.
“Adequate tread depth and correct pressure are absolutely essential,” he said.
He also recommended getting a specialist to check brakes for wear before a long trip.
