Bag thief held

A THIEF couldn’t escape the long arm of the law last week when he was arrested by an off-duty police officer in Ringwood.
Police believe the incident unfolded as a 28-year-old woman walked towards the footbridge to platform three at the Ringwood Railway Station shortly after 8pm on Thursday night.
It is alleged she was approached from behind by an unknown man who grabbed her handbag.
Her plight was witnessed by several people including an off duty Detective Senior Constable from the Armed Crime Task Force.
The off duty officer, with the assistance of a member of the public, chased down the man and tackled him to the ground at the intersection of Wantirna Road and Station Street, resulting in a speedy arrest.
A 24-year-old Lilydale man was taken back to Ringwood police station and charged with one count of robbery.
He was bailed to re-appear at the Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on 3 November.
