Shed to promote biking

By Kath Gannaway
TO ENCOURAGE students ride their bikes to school a new bike shed was declared open in Millgrove by Gembrook MP Tammy Lobato on Friday.
The Millwarra Primary School runs regular bike education programs, not only to teach the children about road safety, but also how to build and maintain bikes.
The $5000 dollar shed was funded under the state government Go For Your Life Bike Shed Seeding Grants program and follows an earlier $6000 grant for bikes, helmets and other accessories.
Ms Lobato said encouraging physical activity in children was important for their physical health and overall wellbeing.
The bike shed, she said, would ensure the bikes would remain safe and in good condition.
“Together these grants are funding a complete recreational activity that can be enjoyed by students in all grades,” Ms Lobato said.
The grants are part of the government’s four year $2.9 million plan which aims to increase the number of children riding to and from school.
Neil Langmaid who runs the school’s bike maintenance workshops and built the shed said additional fencing would be provided soon to ensure a secure place for students own bikes as a means of further encouraging students to ride to school.
