Garden opens gates to history

DEBORAH Curtis inherited a romantic garden when she bought St Lawrence in Warburton six months ago.
She has added her own touches and, when it opens on the weekend of 1 and 2 November as part of the Upper Yarra Garden Club Annual Open Garden Weekend, visitors will see a garden with links to the past and a delightful freshness and new energy.
“This has been a house for honeymooners – a collection of ornamental trees, flowers and bulbs that inspire romance, from soft pinks to the deep red rhododendron in the front,” Ms Curtis said.
For much of its life, the property was a guesthouse, she said.
Four other Warburton gardens, Fruit Salad Farm at 60 Scotchmans Creek Road, York Cottage at 1a York Street, Clematis Cottage at 23 Dammans Road and Claremond Cottage at 14 Webb Street, will be open from 10am to 5pm on both days.
St Lawrence is at 13 Richards Road.
Entry to individual gardens is $5, or to all five $15. Phone Garden Club secretary Barbara Wardell on 5967 1158 for further information and for details of the group discount.
