Big turn out at RSL Memorial

By Monique Ebrington
REMEMBRANCE Day, a reflection on the Australian soldiers who died in war, was well attended last Tuesday through a variety of services across the Yarra Valley.
President of the Healesville RSL Ken Swinser who addressed the crowd at Healesville RSL Memorial reminded those present that it was the 90th anniversary of the end of hostilities.
The particular highlight of the Ode presented by RSL Treasurer Allan Farnell was a poem written by St Bridgid’s Primary School student Laine Gentle titled, What did you say Dig?
The St Bridgid’s choir performed a song titled, The Anzac Spirit, written by the students themselves.
Bugler John Stanhope was also commended for his rendition of First Post and Last Post.
Police closed off the Warburton Highway in front of the Warburton Memorial Park during the service.
Dennis Reeves led the service and read the poem, Why Wear a Poppy while RSL senior vice president Malcolm MacNab delivered the Ode.
Warburton RSL was honoured to have the 93-year-old former WWII soldier Albert Fox, recipient of life membership of the Warburton RSL, present.
Danny Enever brought his son Michael with him to the service and both placed poppies on the Cenotaph in respect to the fallen.
“It’s nice for him to appreciate an important day like today. He wouldn’t be here without it,” Danny said.
