Breaking the ice

SHAKE off those winter chills and warm up these September school holidays with the Thaw Out school holiday program.
Run by the Shire of Yarra Ranges Youth Services team, Thaw Out provides a wide range of fully supervised activities and workshops for young people aged 12 to 25 who live, work or study in the Yarra Ranges.
Youth programs and events worker Amanda Dawson said Thaw Out was a great way for young people to make the most of their school holidays.
“Activities include horse riding, boulder caving, visits to the Melbourne Zoo, Spencer Street DFO, fishing at the Macclesfield Trout Farm, as well as make-up and kick boxing workshops just to name a few,” Ms Dawson said.
“With such a diverse range of activities and workshops available there’s bound to be something to suit everyone, but I encourage young people to book soon as places fill up quickly.”
Ms Dawson said young people would also be able to finish their school holidays on a high note with the Elevation Festival at Yarra Junction skate park on Friday, October 2.
“Elevation is a free youth and family festival and will feature a great range of activities including a BMX competition run by the YMCA, face painting, rock climbing, an animal farm, live music, a barbecue lunch and lots more,” Ms Dawson said. “There will also be a kite making workshop and information stalls run by local agencies to promote mental health week.”
