Woori back after rush

ONLY one Division 1 game was played this week – the rest of the round kicks off next week – but what a game it was.
Wandin had a disappointing year last season while Woori Yallock just fell short in the grand final. An easy start for the runners-up, one would have thought, but it wasn’t to be.
Wandin came out of the blocks in a hurry and before Woori knew what had hit it, it was staring at a four-goal deficit at quarter-time.
The second quarter was an even affair as Woori tried to get itself back into the game, but Wandin outscored Woori by one behind to take a 25-point lead into the main break.
In the third term Woori, hell bent on getting back into the game, started to use the ball more efficiently and probably should have been in front at the last change. Kicking 5.6 to 3.1 prevented that.
Instead Wandin took a five-point lead into the final break but Woori Yallock’s class eventually got it over the line, kicking six goals to one in the last quarter.
Woori Yallock 16.20 (116) d Wandin 12.11 (83). Goals – Woori Yallock: M. Bonuda 6, D. Monkhorst 3. Wandin: M. Peterson 4, M. Ewart 2.
Best – Woori Yallock: M. Bonuda, M. Stolarczyk, P. Sharp. Wandin: J. Bayliss, T. Goodwin, M. Peterson.

@BT Sport Sub Mail:DIVISION 2

THERE was a lot of hype about Yarra Glen in the off season, and at half-time of its game against Kinglake that’s all it seemed it was – hype.
Kinglake looked to have Yarra Glen’s measure and went into the long break with a four-goal lead and few would have predicted what happened in the third.
A massive 18 goals were kicked and it was Yarra Glen that turned it on from the opening bounce of the term – six goals in 10 minutes.
Kinglake hit back and stole the lead halfway through the term but Yarra Glen hadn’t finished and booted a further six goals for the quarter.
The game was still up for grabs at the last change with Yarra Glen holding a 13-point lead. Kinglake kicked the first goal but Yarra Glen replied within seconds to stave off any Kinglake comeback.
A six-goals-to-three final quarter saw Yarra Glen beat last year’s runners-up by 31 points.
Yarra Glen 21.11 (137) d Kinglake 16.10 (106)
Goals – Yarra Glen: M. Attard 5, P. Moate 4, R. Kueffer, G. Braden 3. Kinglake: L. Nott, B. Gallichio 4.
Best – Yarra Glen: D. Watt, S. Roberts, P. Moate. Kinglake: M. Thomas, D. Harris, D, Pywell.
ALEXANDRA, coming down from first division after a horror year, would have been looking to get off to a good start against Seville but it wasn’t to be.
Seville held only a two-goal lead at quarter-time but it was the pace and excellent use of the ball in the second term that saw it slam on eight goals to two to put the game beyond doubt with a 50-point lead going into the long break.
In the second half Seville had too many targets up forward and added 10 goals against Alexandra’s three to run out 94-point winners.
Seville 22.12 (144) d Alexandra 7.8 (50)
Goals – Seville: K. Jones 7, B. James 6, S. Smith 5.
Best – Seville: B. James, K. Jones, B. Pereira.
AN ENTHUSIASTIC crowd enjoyed an entertaining game at Belgrave’s temporary home ground at Narre Warren with 39 goals for the game.
It was Yea that went to the first break with a two-goal lead, booting 7.1 to Belgrave’s 5.1 but in the second Belgrave put on the pressure and kicked 7.3 to Yea’s two goals for a 21-point lead at half-time.
The second half was hard fought with Yea challenging but unable to get a two or three-goal run to put the pressure back on Belgrave.
It was nine goals apiece in the second half with Belgrave outscoring Yea by just two behinds.
Belgrave 21.12 (138) d Yea 18.7 (115)
Goals – Belgrave: P. Gough, J. Pearce 7. Yea: T. Butterworth, P. Mckenna, C. Leathman 3.
Best – Belgrave: D. Leaumont, P. Gough, J. Pearce. Yea: C. Graham, T. Butterwoth, J. Clavarino.
EMERALD and Thornton Eildon put on a fairly even game for most of the day.
Thornton at home is always a hard task but Emerald had the answers and stretched the lead as the game went on.
The only real difference was that Emerald had more avenues to goal with 11 goalkickers compared with Thornton’s six.
Emerald 14.18 (102) d Thornton Eildon 10.11 (71)
Goals – Emerald: K. Yeo, S. Wright 2. Thornton. Eildon: D. Cornish, D. Phillips, R. Chapman
Best – Emerald: D. Porter, J. Cousins, K. Fidanza. Thornton. Eildon: M. Bell, M. Hardy, D. Creed.
BOTH Yarra Junction and Powelltown probably expect a finals berth this season and they started off with a game that was anybody’s at three-quarter-time.
Yarra Junction started the better with a 3.5 to 1.1 first term and looked to have the game under control but Powelltown hit back with a three-goal-to-one second term that saw it go to the main break one point up.
The third quarter was bruising with neither team giving an inch. Powelltown kicked four goals to Junction’s three for a one-goal lead at the last break.
But Yarra Junction saved its best for last, booting eight goals to one to win by 38 points.
Yarra Junction 14.12 (96) d Powelltown 8.10 (58)
Goals – Yarra Junction: J. Gates, T. Wheeler 3. Powelltown: L. Miller, C. Ozols 2.
Best – Yarra Junction: J. Gates, S. Ismail, G. Selby. Powelltown: L. Miller, L. Darwall, S. Preston.
