Gembrook in lead

By Stephen Walter, YVMDFL CEO
GEMBROOK remains undefeated at the top of the ladder after an impressive 10-goal win over Olinda Ferny Creek on Saturday.
After an even first quarter with Gembrook holding a one-point lead, the rest of the day belonged to the Brookers. A five-goal-to-one-behind second term set up Gembrook’s win.
Olinda did show some resilience in the third quarter but Gembrook still stretched its lead by a further two goals, then added another five in the last quarter while Olinda managed just the two.
Scores: Gembrook Cockatoo 18.9 (117) d Olinda Ferny Creek 8.9 (57)
Best: Gembrook: Ricky Clark, Andrew Shipp, David Main. Olinda Ferny Creek: Dylan Troutman, Benjamin Day, Tim Scott.
HEALESVILLE remain winless after Woori Yallock handed out a 44-point defeat on its home ground.
Woori Yallock looked the goods from the outset with a five-goal-to-one first term and it looked then to be “how far Woori Yallock?”
Healesville did claw its way back in the second quarter to outscore its opponents three goals to one but that was about the only resistance from the Bloods for the day. The third quarter belonged to Woori as it added five goals to one to snuff out any chance Healesville thought it might have had. The last quarter was a bit of a scrap with Woori outscoring Healesville by a goal to win comfortably.
Scores: Woori Yallock 15.17 (107) d Healesville 9.9 (63)
Best: Woori Yallock: Joel Adams, Jesse Ridd, Joel Williamson. Healesville: Luke Barclay, Dean Selkrig, Joshua Goding.
UPWEY had to fight off a determined Warburton that has improved markedly this season.
At three-quarter time Upwey held just a seven-point lead and, if not for some inaccuracy, Warburton might well have had its nose in front.
Upwey’s fitness told in the end and it ran out the last quarter booting four goals to one.
Scores: Upwey Tecoma 16.11 (107) d Warburton Millgrove 11.15 (81)
Best: Upwey Tecoma: Steve Dawson, Adam Parsons, Jackson Lucas. Warburton Millgrove: Terry Walker, Liam Barnard, Michael Walker.
IF NOT for inaccurate kicking Monbulk should have had the game against Mount Evelyn iced at half-time. Instead it kept Mount Evelyn in the game with a 5.15 to 3.6 scoreline.
The second half was not pretty football but Monbulk never looked in danger of dropping the game as it kicked seven second-half goals to Mount Evelyn’s six to win in unsightly but effective fashion.
Under-18 Monbulk player Dylan Werts starred with five goals.
Scores: Monbulk 12.20 (92) d Mount Evelyn 9.13 (67)
Best: Monbulk: Kieran Gray, Tim Francis, Dylan Werts. Mount Evelyn: Benjamin Farrugia, Chris Haworth, Callum Urquhart.
WANDIN got onto the winners’ list with a hard-fought win over a Silvan side that couldn’t catch up after a slow start, despite the efforts of Chris Goodlet who ended the day with seven goals.
Wandin came out of the blocks fast and at the first break had six goals on the board to Silvan’s one.
Silvan did claw its way back and a five-goals-to-two third term saw it cut the margin to 15 points. The last quarter was a dour affair with Wandin holding on for a deserved two-goal win.
Scores: Wandin 14.11 (95) d Silvan’s 12.11 (83)
Best: Wandin: Jack Bayliss, Daniel Cox, Daniel King. Silvan: Chriss Goodlet, Jack Straughhair, Rory Kavanagh.

LITTLE separated Yea and Emerald all day. it was goal for goal for most of the match and back-to-back goals were rare. Yea held on to win in a tremendous game of tight football. Emerald no doubt was disappointed with a loss at its home ground but Yea was buoyed with a win unexpected by many.
Scores: Yea 14.9 (93) d Emerald 13.5 (83)
Best: Yea: Patrick McKenna, Cameron Grant, Chris Graham. Emerald: Matthew Steer, Steven Wright, Michael Dompietro.
THE scoreline might indicate that Yarra Glen had it all its own way but after trailing by 53 points at half-time, Powelltown came out and booted the first five goals of the second half to reduce the margin to just 19 points.
But Yarra Glen did what good teams do and responded by scoring six goals and despite Powelltown’s bravery the half-time margin was only one point better.
Yarra Glen finished the game well, booting nine goals to three in the last to win comfortably.
Scores: Yarra Glen 26.21 (177) d Powelltown 13.8 (86)
Best: Yarra Glen: Peter Moate, Leigh Hoffman, Darren Edwards. Powelltown: Rocky Collins, Tom Kelly, Shane Robinson.
WAS this the grand final preview? Only time will tell and perhaps Yarra Glen may have something to say about that. Kinglake started the better and looked more polished while Seville just couldn’t kick the goals when needed.
At half-time Kinglake held sway by 12 points but Seville has been finishing games well this season and this game was no different. It scored 5.8 to 2 goals for a 24-point turnaround and took a two-goal lead into the last quarter.
That saw both teams kick three goals with Kinglake having its chances but not the accuracy, which cost them dearly.
Scores: Seville 15.20 (110) d Kinglake 15.11 (101)
Best: Seville: Matthew Crowle, Shaun Wilson, Leigh Aitkins. Kinglake: Jacob Sibenaler, Damian Pywell, Mathew Thomas.
A GREAT effort from Thornton saw it come from 21 points down at three-quarter-time to win by just one behind. Alexandra at half-time led by seven points and after it booted six goals to three in the third it looked like it had done enough.
But Thornton showed a fine never-say-die attitude with Daniel Creed running wild and David Cornish finishing the good work with four goals, the inspiration for the narrow victory.
Scores: Thornton Eildon 15.18 (108) d Alexandra 16.11 (107)
Best: Thornton Eildon: Daniel Creed, David Cornish, Shannon Galea. Alexandra: Sam Kidd, Michael Bretherton, Zach Heaslip.
YARRA Junction started poorly and had only one behind on the board at the first change against Belgrave’s 3.1. The second quarter saw both teams wasteful in front of goals as Belgrave added 2.7 and Junction 2.5.
Junction was 20 points in arrears at half-time and had to produce in the third to get back. It did, kicking 4.5 to Belgrave’s 2.3 to be only one goal behind at the last change.
Junction had the momentum at the last break and maintained it, booting five last-quarter goals to three to win a hard-fought victory, from behind.
Scores: Yarra Junction 11.13 (79) d Belgrave 10.12 (72)
Best: Yarra Junction: Jamie Craig, David Lever, Hugh Wadsworth. Belgrave: Dean Lunn-Wilson, Peter Gough, Brett Thompson.
