Small, but strong

By Tania Martin
EMERALD Lakers Basketball Club may be small … but it’s providing stiff competition.
Last week it took home its third consecutive Club of the Year title at the annual awards ceremony at the Knox Basketball Association.
The gongs were announced as part of the association’s AGM Monday, 10 May.
The Lakers took out the award for its winter 2009 season performance.
The gong was determined by dividing the number of wins a club had by the number of teams it has.
Club secretary Steve Bigwood said it was a fantastic effort for the Emerald-Lakers to take out consecutive gongs for the winter competition – especially considering the club was a third of the size of some of its competitors.
The Lakers fielded just 24 teams last season, compared to some clubs with 70 teams taking the court.
“It’s an excellent result for such a small club,” Mr Bigwood said.
“The committee is really pleased we have won for the third winter in a row and we won it against some really decent clubs.”
But despite the accolades, the club is still calling for more players to join it.
There are still spots available on the boys under 8 and under 10’s squads and the girls under 8, under 10 and under 12 teams.
Anyone interested in joining the girls should call Rob Fazzino on 0414 909 992 or Rob Fredericks for the boys team on 0409 179 148.
