EX-SERVICEMEN and civilians played under blue skies at Emerald Golf Club’s annual Servicemen’s Day on Saturday. In the servicemen section Bob Waterson (Springvale RSL president) claimed the day and added his name to the trophy that dates back to 1946 and honours the servicemen of Australia and its allies.
The 2010 event included many Vietnam War veterans and also a British naval veteran from the Falklands war.
Paul Farmer in the servicemen section came in a close second with 40 points to lose to Bob by a single point.
In the civilian section Emerald Golf Club president Jeff Marsh scored an impressive 42 points off his 26 handicap, followed by Glenn Panting, visiting from Eastwood, on 39 points (28). Damien Holland and Steve Town were not far behind with 38 points.
Nearest to the pins were Ross Martin on the fourth, Mark Starick (seventh), Tony Farmer (12th) and Jeff Marsh (13th). Wayne Degering was the pro-pin winner on the 18th.
Cheryl Town took out the women’s competition, improving her game greatly to match her husband Steve’s effort of 38 points.
She owes her improvement to adopting a more vigorous training regime and having coffee every Friday with other women golfers to talk golf.
Last Wednesday’s Obliquely Fastidious Golf (OFG) using OFG handicaps saw Allan Ecclestone (handicap 19) win easily to lead home Mick Petrie (30), John Piggott (24) and Moss Fuller (20).
The Emerald Golf Club VGL handicap pennant team played Eastern Sward at home on Sunday winning 12 points to 2, and now travels to Oakleigh next week to try to secure a position in the Division 8 final the next week at Werribee Park.
Last year Emerald won the Division 9 final and went up a grade to Division 8, so to be in contention for the finals this year is a great effort. The winners from Sunday’s pennant matches were John Fisher, Geoff Isherwood, Dean Shannon, Steve Town, Kameron Geeves and Martin Yeats. Captain Ross Martin was the only Emerald player to have a loss. Next week’s comp is the annual three club event.
