In the saddle for cancer challenge

By Monique Ebrington
HEALESVILLE resident David Dixon didn’t think a trip overseas would result in the journey of a lifetime.
Mr Dixon was flipping through his in-flight magazine during a return trip to Melbourne, with his wife Chris, when he spotted an advertisement for the Oncology Children’s Foundation (OCF).
He said that the foundation funds research into childhood cancers and holds regular fundraisers which are targeted around sporting groups and events.
Mr Dixon said he decided to enter the OCF’s Vietnam Charity Cycling Challenge and had already begun training for the event which will set off in October.
The 14-day event will see Mr Dixon pedal along on a gruelling 400km trail through far north Vietnam.
“I had wanted to help out a charity for some time now,” Mr Dixon said.
“I have a young grand-daughter and I could really relate to this charity. I was more then happy to get behind it and support a very worthy cause.”
Mr Dixon, a hobbyist bike rider, has also begun his fundraising campaign and needs to raise more than $1000 for the event.
“Our flight over, and personal expenses, will come out of our own pockets,” he said.
“But the event has a fundraising expectation of $1500. We would love to blow that figure out of the water and hope the community will help us in raising those funds.”
Anyone who would like to sponsor David Dixon in his ride through Vietnam, with proceeds going to the Oncology Children’s Foundation, are encouraged to contact him by email on david.dixon3@bigpond.com.
