Business ropes

By Mara Pattison-Sowden
YARRA Junction Primary School students have been learning the pros and cons of running a business.
The Grade six students have been decorating biscuits from the Gladysdale Bakehouse, packaging, marketing and selling them in school.
They have had to utilise their creativity and numeracy skills, as well as learn to work together as a team.
School chaplain Ed Eadon said the program was developed with the help of Jason Rush at the Gladysdale Bakery, as a way for the students to not just eat the “Yarra Junction Yummies” from the bakery.
“Jason, myself and the principal (Chris Thomas) discussed how we could develop the idea for the kids not just to make and eat the biscuits, but to teach them about profit and loss,” he said.
The students are being taken to the bakery in groups of five, every few weeks, to learn the art of decorating biscuits from Mr Rush and his staff.
They then return to the school to work out their marketing and promotional strategies.
Mr Eadon said the students have shown great creativity and have been selling their hand-crafted biscuits at a rapid rate.
Half of the money raised for the activity will go towards the Breast Cancer Network of Australia and the other half will go towards a student scholarship.
