ANYONE for Chocolate Cake?
The band has been on the music scene since 1989 gathering ARIA awards, an impressive album history, a reputation for sell-out concerts in some of the most prestigious events in Australia and overseas and a legion of devoted followers.
Their Healesville concert on Saturday, 12 June, is a rare opportunity for local fans to indulge themselves – and for people to discover their magic.
David Bridie and cellist Helen Mountfort were with the band Not Drowning Waving before they started My Friend The Chocolate Cake with the intention of playing all acoustic music.
From the beginning, the band emerged as an enjoyable ensemble, as musical friends and colleagues came together to form their unique sound.
Hope Csutoros, a violinist with eastern European gypsy roots and a flamboyant stage presence to match, was an inspired early accomplice. Mandolinist Andrew Carswell and guitarist Andrew Richardson added to an exotic web of acoustic textures. Russell Bradley was the first of several drummer/percussionists.
The band’s trademark organic sounds and lush orchestrations create a sense of reflective melancholy as they perform joyous tunes bursting with wild strings, classic MFTCC chamber pop tunes with airs of a more reflective bend, pondering life, love and loss, imbued with the irrepressible Chocolate Cake charm and wit.
My Friend The Chocolate Cake is the first of Yarra Ranges Council’s Live @ Memo Hall 2010 series of concerts at Healesville Memorial Hall.
Other concerts in the series are Kutcha Edwards Yuyukatha on 17 July, Broderick Smith on 28 August, Mick Thomas on 2 October and Damian Callinan ‘Cave to the Rave’ on 13 November.
