A YARRA Valley concert will be part of Simply Red’s Farewell World Tour later this year.
After what Simply Red’s frontman Mick Hucknall describes as “25 mind-blowing years” the band, which includes legions of Australians among its fans, will perform at A Day On The Green at Rochford Winery on Saturday 9 October.
Australia’s favourite Queen of Soul and disco diva Marcia Hines will support the band as they bow out.
The significance of the event will not be lost of the thousands of fans who held tickets to see Simply Red at Rochford on Sunday 8 February last year.
The show was cancelled in the wake of the Black Saturday bushfires and organisers say the band is particularly pleased to be returning and performing in the Yarra Valley.
Simply Red’s classic pop and elegant ballads have provided an uplifting and emotional soundtrack to the past quarter of a century in what Hucknall says has been an adventure.
“I could never have imagined my career would bring me so far,” he said.
“We want to share this closing anniversary with all the people who have enjoyed our sound throughout the years. Celebrate it and gently move on to the second half of a musical story.”
Since their first tour in 1985, Simply Red have played more than 1100 shows to more than 11 million people, notched up more than 55 million global sales, more than 31 Top 40 UK singles, 3 BRIT Awards, 2 Ivor Novellos, 2 US No.1 Singles and a MOBO Special Achievement.
Simply Red has dominated Australian charts from early albums Picture Book (1985) and Men And Women (1987) to the juggernaut’s The New Flame (1989) and Stars (1991). The Farewell Tour showcases all their amazing hits including Money’s Too Tight To Mention, Holding Back The Years, The Right Thing, Stars, Fairground, If You Don’t Know Me By Now, Something Got Me Started, A New Flame and Sunrise.
Marcia Hines had seven top 10 hits between 1975 and 1981 and is currently working on a new album featuring the songs of Carole King, which is due for release later in the year.
Joe Camilleri’s Black Sorrows will kick off the concert and are also currently recording a new album of new material and favourite hits such as Harley and Rose, Chained to the Wheel, and Hold on to Me.
Tickets went on sale yesterday (Monday 12 July). They can be obtained from ticketmaster.com.au and 136 100 and rochfordwines.com and on 5962 2119.
