Kookas cackle at last

MONBULK Rangers women’s Kookaburras finally broke through for their first win of the season with 3-1 victory over the Knox Strikers.
It was an emotional day as the team and club remembered the death of young Alex Webb two years ago.
Both the Kookaburras and Lyrebirds matches began with the release of helium balloons in memory of Alex.
Alex’s mother, Karen Webb, led the team who played well, made the most of their opportunities and were rewarded with a win.
Alexa Allan scored two goals, the first of which was lobbed over the keeper’s head.
Both shots were from well outside the box.
An excellent game from Darcie Sands saw her contribute the other goal.
The team showed outstanding form for a team with seven first-ear players.
The Women’s Lyrebirds played their best game of the season so far although they went down 0-1 to Knox.
The Lyrebirds had multiple chances but failed to convert despite maintaining good structure and pressure.
They have progressed well this season with the weekend’s game displaying their potential.
The Hornets defeated the Hawks 5-0, in a match between rival Monbulk Rangers under-10 teams.
The first half saw both teams passing well and tackling with intensity.
The Hornets looked dangerous at times but Hawks keeper Aiden Jamieson was able to keep a clean sheet until half-time.
The second half saw the Hornets come out and apply significant forward pressure with Joshua Langhorn scoring the first goal.
Soon after, Aaron Grenda and Dylan Ireland both scored goals for the first time this season. Langhorn went on to complete his hat-trick in a great game for both sides.
The women’s reserves defeated Whitehorse 1-0 in what was a heavily contested match.
The reserves began the game well but the intensity began to drop later in the first half.
Kaity Hargrave scored for the reserves, making the best of a scramble for the ball in front of goal. The second half saw the reserves increase their pressure, in attack as well as defence.
They had multiple chances to score more but the Whitehorse defence proved too strong and the score was kept to one goal.
The men’s Arrows defeated Healesville 3-1 with James Hulbert, Ian Hulbert and Josh Newman all scoring in a highly aggressive game that saw many fouls awarded for illegal tackles.
