Warm time in Winter Cup

By Dennis Fuller
WITH another outstanding round of golf, Dean Shannon (16) leads after two rounds of the three-round Winter Cup at Emerald Golf Club.
His two-round total of 81 puts him firmly into favouritism as he is six points ahead of three other players – the consistent Ben Balfour, president Jeff Marsh and young tyro Riley Stevens, all on 75.
The way Shannon is playing one would assume that he will stand the test and win but golf has the habit of upsetting the golf cart.
Brett Isherwood (23) won the daily comp on a countback with 41 points from Ben Balfour (15) and John Fisher (33).
Martin Yeats (8) headed up A Grade, Isherwood B Grade and Fisher topped C Grade.
Others to raise their heads above the rabble were Shannon with 40, Marsh 38 while David Aitken, Con Whitlock and Paul Farmer all managed 37.
Graeme Fergus proved he has still got it by being nearest the pin on the fourth, Peter Clowes did it on the seventh, Fisher on the 12th, Ken Hill on the 13th and Ben Balfour picked up the pro pin cash on the 18th.
Judy Porter won the women’s comp in her last game at the club before moving to the windswept greenery of Moona Links.
She just fell over the line from Lyn Ward who, as ladies’ club champion, looks forward to winning next week when Porter has gone.
Wednesday’s Overly Fastidious Golf (OFG) using OFG handicaps was a foursomes event. Bouncer Holland and Mick Petrie (21) combined brilliantly to overcome all opposition and win easily with a net 69 from Brett Isherwood and Mark Lothian (17.5) on 77.5.
Next Saturday is the last week of the Sam Ritchie Winter Cup and all will be queueing up to have a lash at Shannon.
