THREE Healesville fire-fighters who have notched up more than a century of service between them were among members recognised by the CFA for their service to the organisation and their community.
Robin Jeffcott received his 45-year clasp, Ron Poole his 40-year clasp, and Robyn Argent her 20-year clasp at the Healesville CFA annual dinner held at Rochford Winery on Saturday 11 September.
The clasps were presented by District 13 Operations Officer Wayne Hirth who commended the veteran members on what he said was a tremendous contribution and commitment to their community.
He also commended volunteer fire-fighters Paul Cousins, Lyn Murray and Jim Cox who received their five-year service certificates.
“I would hate to think where the CFA would be if we didn’t have people like yourselves,” he said.
He said the mix of experience and new blood was what made brigades work.
“When the stuff hits the fan and new members come to the fore, that’s when the CFA shines,” he said.
“We are very, very appreciative of your services.”
Brigade captain Graeme Bates said among highlights of the past year were fewer call-outs, and the introduction of new equipment. The brigade now has a thermal imaging camera which seeks out heat and an Oxy-Viva machine to deliver oxygen anyone suffering from smoke inhalation.
Mr Bates said both were used in a recent house fire at Chum Creek.
“We used the camera in a structure fire earlier this week, with Badger Creek, and we have done training on the equipment with Yarra Glen,” he said.
“They are two pieces of equipment that make the job a lot easier and have great benefits,” he said.
