THE CFA Maroondah Group has officially thanked Healesville RSL for its support during the 2009 bushfires, with a framed display of insignia from 26 organisations which operated out of Healesville.
Maroondah Group Officer Ken Reed presented the commemorative display to RSL Commemorations Officer Bob Gannaway at the Healesville Fire Brigade annual dinner on 11 September.
Mr Reed said the RSL had supported the CFA and the local community when it was needed.
‘On Black Saturday and for the next two weeks, fire services were run ragged, especially at Healesville,’ he said.
Firefighters arrived from around Victoria, interstate and overseas and for some time were operating out of the Healesville fire station.
‘We had a lot of problems with feeding everyone and we approached the RSL, who responded magnificently,’ Mr Reed said.
Healesville CFA captain Graeme Bates said Healesville was the last area reined under control.
‘The RSL really pulled through for us ‘ the staff, members and management ‘ everyone,’ he said.
Mr Gannaway said it was a privilege to accept the display on behalf of the RSL.
He paid tribute to those involved, including then manager Peter McPhee and assistant manager Sue Serra, president Arthur Ford, committee members Vic Williams and Alan Farnell, the RSL members and staff who worked to ensure the needs of the firefighters and others working around Healesville were met.
The display is not only a ‘thank you’ to the RSL, but a permanent recognition of the people and organisations who came to Healesville as part of the 2009 bushfire response.
