New station works take a look back

WANDIN’S fire fighters are looking for the finishing touches to decorate their $250,000 station upgrade.
The community has pulled together to work on extending the existing station to make more room for the town’s 50 CFA members and a new rescue truck.
Because some of the station’s rooms are open for public use, the brigade is looking for memorabilia from past members and surrounding residents who may have photos, fire fighting clothing or equipment to contribute. Brigade captain Peter Polovinka said the ongoing extension work was well on track to accommodate the growing membership.
“The meeting room was far too small for the brigade and we’ll have a new engine bay for when we get a new rescue truck next year,” he said.
Mr Polovinka said the brigade members and their friends had been utilising their trade skills to extend the building, with the help of $250,000 of community donations.
“We’re building the thing ourselves, everybody’s chipping in to make this project possible,” he said.
Brigade member Bill Ter Haar has collected photos of every captain Wandin fire station has had since its beginning in 1942.
“I’ve got a few old helmets and badges, and a display at Seville (fire station) and the Burwood head office,” he said.
“We really want to hang it on the walls and in glass cupboards to show people our history.” Mr Ter Haar will be collecting the memorabilia and can be contacted on resq4@tpg.com.au or 5964 4021.
