The Hoon is King of the Mountain

Contributed by John Wood
THE September King of the Mountain Championships at the Woods Point Gun Club were held in glorious sunshine but still with slight cool bite in the air.
The club has just installed a new wireless voice release system to fire the clay targets so we were all keen to see how it fared.
Four squads made it a busy day that was kicked off by Tom Apps, Mick Ward, Laurie Poile, Jake Ischovits, Alan Guppy and John Wood all shooting the maximum 15/15 in the Eye Opener to share the cash prize.
The first championship was 25 targets single barrel where good concentration is needed as there is no second back-up shot allowed.
Determined shooting by Mick Ward enabled him to take the sash outright and the AA Grade prize as well. Phillip Desmond was 2nd in AA.
A Grade saw Dave ‘The Hoon’ Rosenhain from Warragul and Jim West from Bright go into a shoot-off with Rosenhain winning 27/29 to West’s 26/29.
B Grade was a win for junior shooter Harry Ward 23/27, EL P coming 2nd, 22/27.
Richard Brown had a good win in C Grade 21/25 with Shawnti Coolahan winning her first ever prize by taking C Grade 2nd.
The next event was a 25 target handicap that resulted in juniors Jake Ischovits and Tom Allen going into a shoot-off with two of the more senior members, Alan Guppy and Rosenhain for the championship sash.
It was a quite short shoot-off with Rosenhain taking the sash 27/28, Guppy 2nd, 36/38, Allen 3rd, 35/38 and Ischovits 4th, 25/27. Coolahan shot an excellent 19/25 and our other lady shooter Bec Smith also put in a great effort.
Finally we had a 25 target double tower championship that finally brought out the only possible scores in the three events, Tom Apps and Ross Elstrek both shooting 25/25. Another short shoot off saw Apps crowned as the championship winner, 32/32, Elstrek 2nd, 31/32.
John Wood, Phillip Desmond, Alan Guppy, Dave Rosenhain, Trevor Newman and Richard Brown all carded 24/25 to shoot off for the minor places. The final result was Desmond 3rd, 52/53, Newman 4th, 51/53.
After a long lay off and a hip replacement, Rosenhain limped back into contention with an outright win of the High Gun sash with a final score of 71/75. Harry Ward and Tom Allen shot off for the Junior High Gun, Ward eventually winning 75/87, Allen 2nd 74/87.
Special thanks to sponsors for the day, Peter McDonald and Laura Hunter of Mansfield Power Equipment, Barry and Debbie Tudor of Mansfield Parts Centre and Bernie and Ross Elstrek of Elstrek Constructions.
All in all a very successful day with the new voice release system showing that it will be a step forward once we iron out a couple of bugs.
Anne Skinner did a masterful job keeping everyone fed and happy with great support from Shawnti Coolahan and Rose Butters.
Woods Point Gun Club’s October shoot has been changed to Sunday 31st October starting at 10.30am and will include the 50 target Double Barrel Pub in the Scrub Graded Championship.
