BOXERS from Lilydale and the Yarra Valley took out five of six titles at the Victorian Championships last week.
Healesville’s Patrick Connell is now the Victorian super welter weight champion after he fought and won against Will Heaney at the Victorian Amateur Boxing League titles held on Sunday 7 November in Sunshine.
Nishal Wimalawansa fought and won against Ashley Abdas, making him the Victorian light weight champion at around 60kg, and Josh Bird fought Steve Bruni to win the Victorian cruiser weight champion.
Dave Rayner is now the Victorian heavy weight champion after he won a fight against Che St John, and the only female fighter was Mel Webbers who lost to Queenslander Deseree Robinson.
Mel still went home with a silver medal.
Gruyere boxer Brandon Loebert was scheduled to fight at the titles but had to pull out due to a hand injury.
An earlier fight at the Sunshine club on 22 October scored Mark Henry a Victorian middle weight title.
The boxers at Lilydale Community Youth Club continue to train hard as they head off to the Australian titles on 25 to 27 November in Hobart, Tasmania.
But they are still looking for support and sponsors for their end of year competition, the Fight ‘n’ Fitness Fight Night, on 4 December.
Fight Night will be held at Lilydale’s Youth Club, in the basketball stadium on Market Street in Lilydale. For more information or to book tickets call Nick Lundh on 0417 516 045.
