Great Chase race

HEALESVILLE Greyhound Association hosted heats of the annual Great Chase series on 5 November with Monkami and Reclink Outer East walking away winners.
Around 100 clients and carers from local groups that cater for the intellectually and physically disabled were at the Healesville greyhound track for the event which is part of a state-wide community event held in November each year.
The Great Chase provides 150 community groups across Victoria with free days at the races including complimentary catering and merchandise.
The on-track excitement starts when each group is randomly matched to greyhounds that compete in the series. Groups paired with the more successful dogs share in more than $30,000 in prize money.
Monkami and Reclink Outer East each collected $500 for being matched to Great Chase heat winners Kian Prince and Zohan.
“A great day out at the Great Chase was enjoyed by all 30 Monkami staff and clients who attended”, said Scott Gatehouse, a carer at Monkami.
“We had a lot of fun cheering on Monkami’s greyhound Kian Prince, and the highlight of the day was watching him win and then getting a photo with our champion”, he added.
Four Healesville dogs were set to compete in the Great Chase semi finals at Warrarul yesterday (Monday).
Although Kian Prince was a late scratching, Monkami still had a chance with Bear Enforcer while Newfire Blessed was running for Melba – Blue Ridge Drive group and Zohan putting it on the line again for Reclink Outer East.
The winners will win their groups a further $1000 and a place in the Great Chase grand final in Melbourne on 24 November.
The organisation matched to the Great Chase grand final winner will collect a cool $5000 plus the equivalent of 10 per cent of their greyhound’s earnings for the next 12 months courtesy of Greyhound Racing Victoria.
