Gembrook strikes it big

GEMBROOK Cockatoo headed to Healesville at the weekend, where the big ground suited the team. The attack on the footy was top notch, which showed on the scoreboard when it kicked seven goals to three in the second term to break the game open. Despite Healesville’s Josh Goding kicking five goals for the game, Gembrook’s discipline earned them the four points.

IN WHAT was the match of the round, Mount Evelyn defeated Warburton Millgrove in the dying minutes of the game. The match was an epic tug-of-war between the two sides but Mount Evelyn’s forward line stepped up when needed. Player-coach Chris Murphy kicked eight goals in a dominant man of the match performance. Daniel Coghlan and Alex Calder played well for Warburton.

MONBULK started slow in its game against Wandin and it proved costly as it found itself five goals down at quarter-time. Despite Monbulk fighting back in the second term, Wandin held them off and led by nine goals at three quarter time. Monbulk came again in the final quarter, only to come up short. Wandin’s Garry Sheppard was instrumental in his team’s win, acting as the go-to man and kicking seven goals. Monbulk’s Chris Waldron also kicked seven, with Dean Cleven their best performer.

@BT Sport Sub Mail:Yarra Glen v Olinda Ferny Creek

YARRA Glen had its first win of the season, defeating Olinda Ferny Creek. Neither team could be separated until Yarra Glen broke through in the third quarter to give it a match-winning lead. Ryan Keuffer kicked nine goals for Yarra Glen and was supported by teammates Michael Sawyer and Russell Cowan, who each were fantastic in their team’s win.

TRAVELLING to Woori Yallock for a twilight game, Upwey Tecoma was beaten in almost every aspect of the game, suffering its biggest defeat for many years.
Although Wade Porter kicked five goals, he and team mates Sam Gooley, Jayden Orger and Steve Brotja’s efforts simply weren’t enough. Woori Yallock had eight individual goal kickers and was back at its best. Woori’s Robbie Allen was best on ground.

Healesville v Gembrook Cockatoo

HEALESVILLE played an excellent game against Gembrook Cockatoo at the weekend, keeping its opposition to only three goals for the match. Both teams were slow to start the game, but Healesville kicked into gear whilst keeping Gembrook goalless for the opening term. The first quarter set up the game as Gembrook couldn’t keep up after that.

MOUNT Evelyn travelled to Warburton Millgrove at the weekend and was given a good competition by the Kookaburras. The margin between the two teams was tiny for most of the day, with the last quarter deciding the winner.

WANDIN and Monbulk provided a great contest on the weekend, with the game in the balance until the final quarter when Wandin seemed to run out of legs. There was only two points in it at half time but Monbulk’s backline held up well and kept Wandin goalless for the quarter.

YARRA Glen started off strongly against Olinda Ferny Creek, but allowed them back into the game by the end of the third quarter. Olinda fought back strongly but were wayward in front of goal, which cost them dearly. Yarra Glen’s William Goodwin kicked five goals in his team’s gutsy win, with Callum Orren and Ben Ashton also instrumental.

IN THIS low scoring match, Upwey Tecoma defeated Woori Yallock by three goals. Both teams kicked only one goal up until half time before the match broke open in the third term. The competition between the two teams was fierce with Zach Monkhorst and Tim Anderson best on ground for Woori Yallock. Brent King and Stan Mills were Upwey Tecoma’s best.

SENIORS
Alexandra v Kinglake

ACCURACY proved to be the biggest difference between Alexandra and Kinglake when they met on Saturday, with the latter kicking 12 points from 21 shots on goal. Alexandra’s pressure around the ground was great in their hard-earned victory. James Kidd, Daniel Creed, Corey Jack and Sam Kidd each performed well for Alexandra, while Brett Robinson and Kevin Smith were Kinglake’s best.

SEVILLE fired out of the blocks in their match against Powelltown, showing once again that they’re a force to be reckoned with come finals time. In another blinding performance, Seville’s Kane Jones kicked 11 goals, bringing his tally to 23 from the past two matches and 28 for the season.

YARRA Junction were slow to get into the match and were also highly inaccurate, keeping Belgrave in the game until the last quarter. But Belgrave couldn’t capitalise in the final term and walked away with a disappointing loss.

YEA struggled for much of the game when they took on Emerald at home on the weekend. Emerald’s pressure was top notch, not allowing their opposition the opportunity to get their hands on the open ball. Forward Matthew Cox kicked eight majors in a comfortable win by the visiting team.

Alexandra v Kinglake

ALEXANDRA played a great match against Kinglake at the weekend, keeping the visiting side to seven goals for the game while piling more than 20 themselves.Alex’s Lyndon Purcell kicked eight goals in his starring role and was supported by team mates Brandon Collett and Ben Cooper.

HAVING not kicked a goal in the first term, Powelltown were always going to struggle in the remaining three quarters of their match against Seville. They did, losing by a whopping 138 points. Seville’s Brayden Schembri and Nick Sciortino both kicked six goals, while Glenn Cornwall kicked five. Seville is proving to be the team to watch.

YARRA Junction enjoyed another win on the weekend, this time over Belgrave at home. They kept the visiting side goalless in the first quarter and kicked four of their own to set the tone early on.

EMERALD kicked themselves out of their game against Yea in the first quarter, kicking six points to Yea’s one goal. The visiting side couldn’t make amends for their accuracy as Yea made them pay – leading at every break after the opening stanza.
