THE closest Gembrook Cockatoo got to Olinda Ferny Creek in the division one senior game on Saturday was in the first quarter.
From there, it was simply playing catch-up. Olinda played well and despite kicking 16.15, its pressure around the ground and willingness to attack was what saw it in front.
Even when Olinda had the opportunity to slacken, its dominance continued and, led by Nick Broomhall (three goals), Owen Millwood (one) and David Noorda went on to defeat the Brookers by 34 points.

Healesville hosted Woori Yallock on the weekend and beat the visitors by 29 points. After a close tussle in the first quarter, Woori simply couldn’t get enough of the footy and scored only five goals for the game.
Healesville’s backline worked hard, as did its midfielders, and its pressure paid dividends. But the side’s inaccuracy leaves it with work to do. Mark Gibb, Nick Mende and Matthew Fraraccio were Healesville’s best, and Michael King (two goals), Dallas Spencer and Anthony Witkowski stood out for Woori Yallock.

Upwey Tecoma rose to the tough challenge of beating Warburton Millgrove at home with a convincing win. The margin between the two sides was only two goals heading into the last quarter, but Upwey kept Warby to only one goal in the final term while kicking six of its own for a 36-points win Tom Hedge (two goals), Dylan Sloane and Sam Gooley were Upwey Tecoma’s best, while Tyson McKenzie and James Iacono (two each) and Paul White stood up for Warburton Millgrove.

The difference between Mount Evelyn and Monbulk was only four points at half-time but the home side came out firing after the main break and booted eight goals to the visitors’ two. It was Mount Evelyn’s first win since round three. James Charge (three goals), Steve Tesoriero (two) and Steven Martin were the home side’s best, while Shannon Koole (four), Ben Bedford-Lee and Sam Whittington were gallant for Monbulk in a 38-point loss.

In a low-scoring game Yarra Glen defeated Wandin by 28 points. Even though the win didn’t lift the home side from the bottom, it is sure to provide some confidence for next week’s match against Gembrook Cockatoo. Yarra Glen’s Peter Moate (two goals), Jason Ball, and David Watt were their side’s best, while Geoff Bartling (one goal), Aaron Young and Jack Bayliss toiled hard for Wandin.

Gembrook Cockatoo v Olinda Ferny Creek
Olinda Ferny Creek headed to Gembrook Cockatoo and scored a percentage-boosting win. The Brookers were down eight goals at quarter-time and couldn’t recover. Nick Keegan (eight goals), Zachariah Longham (seven), Lachlan Meadows (three) and Matthew Taylor were Olinda Ferny Creek’s best, while Andrew Moore (two), Jake Mawson, David McPherson and Jarryd Hamilton played well for Gembrook Cockatoo.

Healesville never looked like losing against Woori Yallock. It started strongly and was up by six goals at half-time. Woori Yallock couldn’t get anywhere near the footy, let alone get on top of Healesville’s backline, and scored just four goals for the match. Lachlan Wright (two goals), Scott Berner, and Bradley Clark were Healesville’s best, and Jesse Butcher (two), Nicholas Korosa and Luke Boontjes stood out for Woori in its seven-goal loss.

Upwey Tecoma remains on top of the ladder for at least another week after defeating Warburton Millgrove at home. The game came to a head in the final quarter when Warby scored only one goal and Upwey went on to kick five. Ryley Hannagan (one goal), Matthew Gottliebsen and James Blair were Upwey Tecoma’s best and Luke James (three), Isaac Andueza and Jason Coghlan played well in their side’s loss.

Mount Evelyn’s defence stood tall on the weekend, keeping Monbulk to just five goals. Bradley Tempest (three goals), Callum Petrie (one) and Matthew Blake led the home side to victory. Nathan Wheldon (two), Kevin Davies (one) and David Graham were judged best for Monbulk.

Yarra Glen is vying to play finals this season, and after defeating Wandin at the weekend, things are starting to fall into place for the side that joined division one this season. The game might have been low scoring and the home side might have been wayward in front of goal, but it was its last-quarter effort that put it in front. Patrick Ashton (two goals), Ben Ashton and Jamon D’Agrent were instrumental in their team’s win, and Dylan Decler, Jon Napoleone and Samuel Marsh (two) were best for Wandin.

Alexandra v Yea
Alexandra, fourth on the ladder, hosted Yea and won by 20 points. Matthew Steiner (three goals), Sam Kidd and Zach Heaslip stood out for Alexandra, as did Jai Robinson (two) and Shaun Martin and Jaryed Garlick (one each) for Yea.

Despite this match being close, Kinglake never looked like losing – leading at every change against Belgrave. The home side’s biggest problem was its kicking – 9.18 to Kinglake’s 12.12. Matthew Roberston (three goals), Shaun McMahon and Brett Brown were Kinglake’s best, Matthew Hall (three), Blake Campbell (one) and James Mason played well for Belgrave.

Powelltown enjoyed just its second win of the season, defeating Yarra Junction by 15 points at home. Powelltown trailed in the first half but came out firing after the break. Yarra Junction won the last quarter but the home side held strong. Powelltown’s Shane Robinson (seven goals), Daniel McLellan (one) and Rocky Collins helped get their team the four points, Daniel Amrein (two goals), Nathan Fall and Daryl Sawley were their side’s best.

Little separated Emerald and Seville on the weekend until the home side scraped over the line in a gripping last term. Leigh Aitkins (one goal), Kane Shore and Thomas Eddy played their part in keeping Seville a game clear on top of the ladder. Steven Wright (two), Ryan Simpson and Caillin Porter were Emerald’s best in a four-point loss.

Alexandra v Yea
Yea travelled to Alexandra, knocked off the home side and now sits second on percentage. Yea trailed until half-time but produced a massive third quarter to run over the top. Andrew Martin (six goals), Zac White, Matthew Lowe and Jack Hodge were Yea’s best. For Alexandra Shaun Graham (two goals), Jack Steer, Josh Gesler and Jesse Newton stood tall.

Kinglake put together a great four-quarter performance when it travelled to Belgrave on the weekend. Kinglake’s first win of the season couldn’t have come at a better time, as it now sits sixth on the ladder – edging closer to the top four. Jacob Styles, John Burns and Ziddane Khattab helped to lead their team to the 26-point win, and Lachlan Driscoll (six goals), Joshua Latto (one) and Dylan Lowe were best for Belgrave.

Yarra Junction headed to Powelltown and kept its finals hopes alive, defeating the home side. Powelltown didn’t score in the first quarter but improved as the game wore on. Jacob Traynor, Dylan Kelso, Rhys Goodinson and Jake Singleton stood out and Harrison Tindley-Rowe and Cameron Spaulding (eight goals each), Tom Harris and Ewan were best afield in Yarra Junction’s win.

Seville suffered its first loss of the season, going down at home to Emerald. The home side was kept goalless in the second quarter and kicked only five goals for the game. Emerald led at every change. Jarrad Donders, Jason Burns (one goal each) and Aaron Thomson were best on ground for the Bombers, Nicholas Birch (one), Alexander Behre and Luke Nash worked all day for Seville.
