Warburton downed in shock defeat

By Carli Mitchell
Wandin v Warburton Millgrove
WANDIN won in the upset of the round when it hosted Warburton Millgrove at the weekend.
With its four-point win, Wandin demonstrated how even the competition is this season. Jack Bayliss and Ben Wratten (one goal each) and Thomas Price and were Wandin’s best in the close win, and for Warburton Millgrove, Daniel Coghlan (two), Paul White and Terry Walker stood tall.
Yarra Glen v Gembrook Cockatoo
Yarra Glen hosted Gembrook Cockatoo, and in a low-scoring match the visitors walked away with the four points. The home side proved wayward with its kicking and remained goalless in the final term – the final nail in the coffin. Tristan Whytcross, Ricky Causer and Eamon Tomlin were Gembrook Cockatoo’s best, and James Shambrook, Russell Cowan and Leigh Hoffman shone for Yarra Glen.
Upwey Tecoma v Healesville
Upwey Tecoma now sits atop the ladder after its win over Healesville on the weekend. Both teams proved inaccurate in front of goal, but once Upwey got the lead, Healesville couldn’t step up. Upwey won by 25 points but Healesville’s defensive pressure in the final term prevented a blow-out.
Steve Dawson (one goal), David van Hoorn (one goal) and Sam Gooley were the best for the home side, while Daniel Barclay (two), Nicholas Mende and Joshua Goding toiled hard for Healesville.
Woori Yallock v Mount Evelyn
The weekend’s game between Woori Yallock and Mount Evelyn was almost as enthralling as the Wandin and Warburton Millgrove encounter.
Woori and Mount Evelyn could not be split, with both sides walking away with two points. Woori Yallock kicked itself out of the match with its wayward 11.14, while Mount Evelyn simply couldn’t get enough of the footy.
Brendan Sneddon (four goals), Jordan Williams (two) and Sam Ismail (one) were Woori’s best and James Charge (one), Steven Martin and Michael Smith were huge for Mount Evelyn.
Monbulk v Olinda Ferny Creek
In a low-scoring match, Monbulk hosted Olinda Ferny Creek on the weekend and lost by two goals in a nail-biter. Although Monbulk kept Olinda to only one goal in the final term, the visiting team’s lead proved to be just out of reach.
Ryan Davis (one goal), Patrick Rosier and David Noorda were Olinda Ferny Creek’s best, while Michael Hughson (one), Kieran Grey and Matthew Mullinder stood out for the home side.

Wandin v Warburton Millgrove
Wandin hosted Warburton Millgrove and their match proved to be a great spectacle. Both sides deserved a win but couldn’t be split and ultimately shared the spoils in a draw.
Chris Ruhl, Liam McGookin and Dylan Decler fought gallantly for Wandin, while Luke James (one goal), Isaac Andueza and Nicholas Terrill were the best for Warburton Millgrove.

Yarra Glen v Gembrook Cockatoo
Yarra Glen continued its good season, defeating Gembrook and securing fifth spot on the ladder. The game was close from the beginning as neither side allowed their opposition breathing space. Phillip Cowan (one goal), Nathan de Munk and Andrew Medley were Yarra Glen’s best, and for Gembrook Cockatoo, Nicholas Hendrikx and Liam Turner (one goal each) and James Failla were the stand-outs.
Upwey Tecoma v Healesville
With its win over Healesville at the weekend, Upwey Tecoma is now a win in front of its nearest opposition.
Upwey played a great game and but for its inaccuracy, would have won in a canter. Alexander Kelly (one goal), Matthew Gottliebsen and Brent King were Upwey Tecoma’s best, while for Healesville, Joel Crowther (one), Kyle Milgate and Ethan Scanlon worked all day.
Woori Yallock v Mount Evelyn
Woori Yallock hosted Mount Evelyn on the weekend but lost in a low-scoring affair. Woori struggled throughout and couldn’t match the pace Mount Evelyn set early in the match. Both sides were inaccurate, but the visiting team’s relentless attack on the ball saw it over the line. Isidor Neimann (two goals), Ryan Gilbert and Sam Savini were Mount Evelyn’s best, while Hayden Smith (one), Tim Anderson and Shane Kennedy played well for Woori Yallock.
Monbulk v Olinda Ferny Creek
Monbulk’s pursuit of its third win of the season has been extended at least another week after losing to Olinda Ferny Creek at home. Olinda’s pressure was too strong for the hosts, keeping Monbulk scoreless in the first quarter and only allowing three goals for the match. Matthew Michalos (five goals), Patrick Truesdale and Lachlan Meadows put in huge performances for Olinda Ferny Creek; while Kevin Davies, Cameron Griffiths and Matthew James stood up for Monbulk.

Emerald v Belgrave
Playing at home at the weekend, Emerald hosted Belgrave in what proved to be a fantastic performance by the home side. Belgrave couldn’t catch a break and ultimately buckled under Emerald’s pressure – the visiting team managed only eight scoring shots compared with Emerald’s 27 – and only one goal for the match.
Emerald’s win has it sitting second on the ladder, while Belgrave’s loss drops the side to second last. Josh Taylor (three goals), Ryan Simpson (one) and Matthew Steer were Emerald’s best, while Brett Thompson (one), Tim Riley and Benjamin Harris played well for a heavily beaten Belgrave side.
Alexandra v Seville
Alexandra hosted Seville and for three quarters it was difficult to tell which side was going to walk away with the four points. Alex entered the final term with a two-goal advantage but finished the game poorly as Seville slammed on a 10-goal fourth quarter to storm home. Martin Ekers and Shane Smith (three goals each) and Michael Gavric (one) were Seville’s stand-outs, and for Alexandra, Daniel Steel (three), Neil Oakley (two) and Corey Jack loomed large.

Emerald v Belgrave
Emerald hosted Belgrave and, as was the case in many of their previous games this season, was too good for the visitors. Belgrave’s on-ballers struggled to get their hands on the footy and its forwards simply could not conquer Emerald’s backline, which stood up magnificently. Matt Quinn (two goals), Ricky Eccarius (one) and Dylan Harris were deemed best for Emerald while for Belgrave, Jordan McDermott, Joshua Latto and Jordan Samarias played well in an otherwise forgettable game.
Alexandra v Seville
Alexandra struggled all game long under Seville’s immense pressure and just couldn’t find the footy. Brayden Schembri (two goals), Alexander Behre (one) and Rainer Culwick were deemed best for Seville in a win that sees the side perched atop the ladder, while for Alexandra, Ben Cooper, Jack Steer and Ben Woollard played well in their side’s loss.
