Treat for teenagers

By Casey Neill
YARRA Ranges teens can dance the night away next weekend in a safe, fun environment.
Police are running a Blue Light Disco for 12 to 15-year-olds at Mooroolbark Community Centre from 7pm to 11pm on Friday 8 July.
Belgrave Acting Sergeant Ron Roszczyk said the blue light disco concept started in Mooroolbark in 1976, but hadn’t run in the past few years, leaving a gap for Yarra Ranges’ youths.
“We want to provide safe, healthy, supervised entertainment for young people in an environment which excludes drugs, alcohol consumption and violence,” he said.
“And parents can feel secure in the knowledge it is fully supervised.
“We will encourage better relations and improved communication between young people, police and adult members of the community by providing a fun, non-confrontational environment.”
Teens can dance to all the latest hits and go into the running to win prizes.
Police and youth organisations will supervise the event, and reinvest a $5 entry fee into future activities for Yarra Ranges youths.
No smoking, drugs or alcohol is permitted, pass-outs are not available and anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated.
There is no entry after 7.45pm, and pickup is between 10.45pm and 11pm. A parent or adult guardian must accompany any patron leaving early.
