History links in language

HEALESVILLE students have been learning a language that is close to home.
In fact, the Woiwurrung language was spoken for many generations by the Wurundjeri people who lived along the Yarra River.
In a historic move, the Indigenous language is being passed on to interested students at Healesville High School.
Teacher Jeannette Kavanagh has been helping Wurundjeri elders Doreen Garvey Wandin and Joy Wandin Murphy teach the nine students. “Some of the students are non-Aboriginal. They wanted to participate in this program to learn a new language, or they want to know more about the first Australians – or both,” she said.
