YARRA Valley residents have just this week left to see a unique exhibition of Aboriginal Dreamtime stories.
Yapa – Stories from the Heart, is being held at Worawa Aboriginal College in Healesville during July.
The exhibition showcases art from the Warlukurlangu Artists’ Aboriginal Corporation, an art centre at Yuendumu in the Northern Territory.
Warlukurlangu means “belonging to fire” in Warlpiri and is named after a Fire Dreaming west of Yuendumu.
Worawa director Lois Peeler said Yapa is a Warlpiri word meaning Aboriginal.
She said Warlukurlangu, established in 1985, is a stronghold of traditional Warlpiri culture and an essential part of Yuendumu’s community life.
“The Dreaming refers to the creation period and the paintings in this exhibition feature the artists’ Dreaming stories,” Ms Peeler explained.
“Although the Dreaming refers to creation events of the past, it embraces the past, present and future.”
Proceeds of the sale of all art works go directly back to the artists and projects supporting community activities for dialysis, the funeral fund, camp dog veterinary services, cultural museum and other projects.
Yapa – Stories from the Heart is on show at the Sandra Bardas Art Gallery at Worawa, Barak Lane, Healesville.
The exhibition is open from Thursday to Sunday from 10.30am to 3.30pm, or by appointment. Phone 5962 4344 or 0419 506 004.
