AS GIPPSLAND was busy sandbagging last week, the Yellingbo community was reaching out to help those in northern Victoria who are still recovering from flooding.
Students at Yellingbo Primary School and volunteers from Yellingbo CFA collected two hampers of non-perishable goods to send to northern Victoria.
Yellingbo CFA volunteer Brett Kerford said when the town got the call out for donations from the Volunteer Fire Brigades Victoria, everyone was keen to jump on board.
“Those people are still struggling and we just wanted to try and help the families and farmers out,” he said.
Yellingbo Primary School principal Rick Scott people did not realise that it takes a long time for communities to fully recover after natural disasters.
“This is what we’re about, community getting together and working at its best,” he said.
“It’s sad when you know there’s still water in paddocks and farmers can’t put crops in the ground or food on the table.”
The hampers will be taken to CFA headquarters along with many others to be given to the flood-affected families up north.
