MAROONDAH Retirement Village was one of the longest serving projects of the Lions Club.
Although MRV was an independent, incorporated body, Lions Club members held MRV committee of management positions for more than 40 years, looking after the interests of residents.
Management of MRV was transferred to Uniting Care Harrison last year.
After the 1962 bushfires, the need for low cost housing for the elderly became apparent.
In 1968 the Lions Club called a public meeting to discuss the possibility of developing a retirement village in Healesville.
It was an ambitious vision but one that was spectacularly realised.
The Lions Club purchased land from the Granton and Dindi Sawmills in Don Road.
On the banks of the Grace Burn, it was just a few minutes walk from the East End shops and beautiful Queen’s Park.
With the help of the Healesville community, fundraising drives and grants were obtained and the first units of Maroondah Retirement Village began construction in March 1972.
In February 1983 the final six of 30 units were complete.
Evelyn MP Jim Plowman officially opened the village on 2 May 1987.
Most recently, the main driveway into the village was named E. R. (Bill) Frogley Memorial Drive in recognition of Mr Frogley’s years of dedication to the village.
