Camp fires keep burning

By Emma Schenk
CAMPERS say they are relieved to hear they will still be able to have their fires.
Minister for Environment and Climate Change Ryan Smith has denied there are any proposed changes to camp fire regulations after rumours about a ban surfaced.
“We are so relieved,” said long-term camper at the Warburton camping ground Vicki Curwen after many locals recently became concerned due to speculation that the ban would soon take place.
“We’ve been enjoying camp fires for over 25 years and it just wouldn’t have been the same without them,” the Langwarrin resident said.
The DSE suggest a fire ban at Warburton Camping Ground after it failed in 2008 to shut some campsites at Warburton Camping Ground in order to let the land return to its natural state.
The fire ban plan also failed to be approved and its details have only recently come to light, sparking the recent concerns.
“I was bewildered by the DSE’s plan to ban fires,” Ms Curwen said.
“They are absolutely safe being lit on maintained and mowed grass, in a container away from tents and patrolled by the manager.”
Her whole family say they are ecstatic that they can continue to cook marshmallows and potatoes on the fire and benefit from long conversations under the moonlight.
Some restrictions are still in place for public fires, and Gembrook MP Brad Battin said people should not light camp fires on total fire ban days or when there is acute bushfire danger.
People should also check with restrictions on lighting fires in public places and always ensure a camp fire is not left unattended.
