Woman hit by phone scammers

THREE Healesville residents in one day have been caught out by a phone scam making the rounds.
An elderly lady has lost almost $1000 after giving out personal details over the phone.
Senior Constable Matt McInnes said residents were receiving phone calls from people saying they were from the Office of Fair Trading.
“They tell you you’ve been overcharged by the bank, and they will get that money back to you at a 10 per cent cost,” he said.
“They are ringing up asking for ID, dates of birth, and then call back 10 minutes later to confirm the first four digits of a credit card.”
Sen Const McInnes said people should know if the bank was calling them, the bank should have all the details.
“If in doubt, don’t tell them over the phone, go down and speak to your local bank,” he said.
Phone scams can be reported to SCAMWatch, run by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, on 1300 795 995.

Healesville police are warning residents not to give out their banking details over the phone.
