HEALESVILLE Pharmacy and Yarra Junction Pharmacy together with pharmacies in Montrose and Belgrave are urging people of all ages to give more attention to the health of their bones with bone density testing days at the pharmacies in mid September.
The testing, conducted by ultrasound technique tests assess fracture risk.
Evelyn Holsman, director of Australian Bone Density Testing Centre which provides the service, said the tests are 100 per cent safe and include a written result and information booklet.
In the latest information regarding screening for osteoporosis, the United States Preventative Services Task Force (USPSTF) states that quantitative ultrasound effectively predicts fracture risk in postmenopausal women and men.
Ms Holman said quantitative ultrasound does not involve radiation and because it is portable can easily be implemented in primary care settings.
“We are proud of our special program which combines bone density testing with information for people to make their own informed lifestyle choices beneficial for bone health.” Ms Holsman said. “All participants, regardless of age and their level of risk, receive information about calcium, vitamin D, exercise and more.”
Osteoporosis means bones become thin, fragile and break easily.
Ms Holsman said bones reach peak strength around the age of 25 and from around 35, both men and women can slowly start to lose bone strength at about one per cent a year.
“The outstanding fact is that osteoporosis is largely preventable and treatable and does not have to be a consequence of getting older,” Ms Holsman said.
