AN ALTAR used in Marysville’s makeshift chapel to farewell Black Saturday victims has been replicated in Woori Yallock’s pioneer chapel.
The two replicas are made from spotted Birdseye Ash timber, with special thanks to George Anderson and Glen Fiske.
The two altars sit with a giant log stump in the chapel, and there are plans for a small museum at the back of the chapel. Graham Fall will help build the memorial timber cutter’s hut.
The chapel was built to care for families in the valley and is dedicated to the timber workers of Victoria.
This will be the third year the Timber Memorial Service will be held, and the numbers continue to grow with statewide interest for this day of remembrance. Committee member Bette Phillips said families who would like to have relatives remembered were asked to submit photos and information to form an honour roll of workers.
“To have a place honouring the workers will ensure that the memories of those hard, risky days are not forgotten,” she said.
Photos, stories and memorabilia are needed by 8 October to fill the memorial that will be held at the Heritage Pioneers Chapel, in Woori Yallock on Saturday 15 October from 11am.
To include a loved one’s memories in the Timber Memorial Service memorabilia can be dropped, clearly marked with the name of the person to be remembered and contact details to return photos, at the Woori Yallock Post Office or email them to Leonie Lang info@heritagefunerals .com.au.
