Camp unites family – John van Putten and his daughter Cassie, and older daughter Brooke, rear, see the value in family camp. 71675

WHEN his daughter was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder at the age of two, John van Putten didn’t know how his life would change.
Eight-year-old Cassie can entertain herself for a while but she needs a watchful eye “around the clock or she will be out of the front door quick as lightning” he said.
Interchange Outer East, which services the Dandenongs and the Yarra Ranges, knows how important it is to service needs to support the entire family, not just the person with a disability.
Families are able to attend a three-day camp once a year where some rest and relaxation, accommodation, food and entertainment are provided for the whole family.
The Mount Evelyn father said family camp was “such an eye opener” but also a bit daunting at first.
“I remember coming back from the first camp and I was naïve and not understanding of disabilities,” he said.
“It was scary to see what the future holds for us but it was also great catching up with some of the parents to see how they deal with things.
“I was able to speak to parents that had kids more advanced in age but similar limitations.”
Mr van Putten, Cassie, and older sister Brooke have now been on family camp five times, and all of them enjoy the social interaction the camp brings.
For some families it’s the only holiday they have during the year.
But it does come at a cost.
Interchange Outer East services team leader Sarah Wilson said although families were asked to make a small contribution it only covered a quarter of the costs.
“The camp costs the agency almost $40,000 each year,” she said. “That’s why we’ve decided to contribute all profits raised from the Octabulous event to Interchange Outer East’s family camp.”
Octabulous will be a Spring racing-themed event, open to the public, which will be held at York on Lilydale on Friday 14 October.
There will be loads of games and prizes, finger food included, a live comedian, silent auction and everyone is invited to dress up in their best frocks.
Tickets can still be purchased for $30, before the night.
