SEVILLE’s traffic lights were switched on last week providing motorists and pedestrians with improved safety at the Warburton Highway and Link Road/Bell Street intersection.
Seville CFA will also have emergency priority access for their trucks at the traffic signals.
But not everyone is happy, with some residents saying the peak-hour traffic snarls have increased dramatically.
The lights were delivered late due to design changes and follow up audits between Yarra Ranges Council, VicRoads and SP Ausnet, but councillor Graham Warren said he was pleased with its completion.
“Residents have been waiting a long time for these lights so I’m very happy to announce they are now operational,” he said. “While the project was made more complex because of changes to safety requirements for contractors and the street lighting design, it is wonderful to now see the traffic lights working.”
Seville resident Bill Wellington said in his submission to the council that the traffic lights would create heavy hold ups in traffic flow.
“And boy was I right,” he said last week.
“Morning and night the traffic snarls have increased dramatically and all in such a short time, just imagine what will happen when the gigantic supermarket takeover occurs.”
He said the traffic was now banked up over the hill and part way down the other side towards Wandin during peak hour.
“This problem I feel is becoming the talk of the town and will obviously get much worse,” he said.
The project was funded under the Federal Government’s Auslink Strategic Regional Program with the council and the Federal Government sharing the cost.
