YVMDFNL Wrap Saturday 26 April
ROUND three played host to three very big Anzac Day clashes.
Warburton Millgrove fought back to have a 42 point turnaround in the last to beat Healesville.
Upwey Tecoma was in control all day and comfortably accounted for Belgrave while up at Kinglake, Brendan Fevola fought admirably and kicked five goals for Kinglake but it wasn’t enough to account for the rampaging centre line of Yarra Glen.
Warburton Millgrove 14.13 (97) d Healesville 11.9 (75)
Warburton got its first victory of the season after a stunning come from behind win to leave Healesville winless after three rounds.
The first half was an even contest with teams going goal for goal and it was Healesville that led by just four points at the main break.
The third quarter saw Healesville take control as it booted five goals to two and jumped out to a handy 20 point lead at the last break and looked set to record its first victory.
But Warby had other ideas and produced arguably its best quarter of footy for a couple of seasons as it all of a sudden found its run and Healesville players found themselves chasing tail.
Warby slammed on 7.7 for the term and held Healesville to just 1.1 to turn a 20 point three quarter time deficit into a remarkable 22 point victory.
Best
Warburton: L. Barnard, J. Iacono, T. Walker.
Healesville: T. Costigan, A. Davies, D. Morrison.
Upwey Tecoma 20.12 (132) d Belgrave 11.18 (84)
Upwey look to be getting back to their best form after a comprehensive 48 point win over Belgrave.
Upwey set its victory up in the first quarter with a stunning eight goal quarter and holding Belgrave to just the two majors.
Belgrave did come back slightly in the second term and reduced the margin to 26 points at the half time break but Upwey put the game beyond doubt in the third with another eight goals to two term with the margin a huge 67 points.
Belgrave did outscore Upwey in the last four goals to two to make the scoreboard a little more respectable but make no mistake Upwey was far and away the dominant side in this match.
Best
Upwey Tecoma: K. Grenda (7 goals), S. Gooley, R. Hannagan.
Belgrave: M. Turner, D. Loosz, T. Stubley.
Monbulk 16.10 (106) d Mount Evelyn 14.12 (96)
This was a ripping game from start to finish by two teams that look very much on the improve from last season.
Monbulk got out to a 14 point lead at the first break before Mount Evelyn reeled that in to just four points at half time.
The third quarter went goal for goal in what was a battle of the defences and by the last change it was Monbulk by just two points.
The last quarter saw Monbulk more efficient with the ball forward as it had five scoring shots to produce 4.1 while Mount Evelyn had seven shots to score 2.5.
This meant Monbulk walked of with a gutsy 10 point victory and its season right on track.
Best
Monbulk: M. Favrin (5 goals), R. Robertson, M. Tasiyan.
Mount Evelyn: R. Hartfield, C. Urquhart, W. Lees.
Olinda Ferny Creek 14.15 (99) d Wandin 14.11 (95)
Olinda sits at the top of the ladder undefeated after upsetting Wandin by four points and leaving it winless.
Wandin held the lead at every siren but the all important final one.
Wandin held a four point lead at quarter time, stretched that to 11 by halftime and then to 16 by the last change but it just could not shake off an Olinda team that managed to stay in touch.
Olinda is a very fit side and the players showed it in the last as their run through the middle was first class.
They booted five last quarter goals to two to hit the lead late and held on to record an amazing four point victory.
Best
Olinda Ferny Creek: D. Noorda, D. Wilson, K. Currie.
Wandin: J. Ladner, R. Ross, K. Talevski.
Woori Yallock 24.13 (157) d Emerald 6.5 (41)
Possibly the less said about this game the better, but that would be taking a fair bit away from Woori Yallock which was outstanding from quarter time onwards.
The lead was just two goals in Woori’s favour at quarter time but after that the day was all in its favour.
The team booted seven goals to two in the second to lead by 52 points at the half.
It then stretched that to 71 by the last change and then romped home with a nine goal to two last quarter to record a massive 116 point victory and show it is very much looking at going back-to-back-to-back.
Best
Woori Yallock: T. Anderson, K. Busoli, D. Ryan.
Emerald: C. Porter, T. Thomsen, S. Wright.

Division 2 Seniors
Yarra Glen 28.20 (188) d Kinglake 5.9 (39)
This was the big Anzac Day clash with big Brendan Fevola lining up for Kinglake and, unfortunately, the game turned out to be a bit of a fizzer as Yarra Glen dominated from start to finish.
Fevola did do a good job booting his teams five goals but at the same time he was quite well held by a much disciplined Jason Ball who had the big job on him.
Yarra Glen had this game in its keeping from quarter time as it jumped out to a 32 point lead.
It then put the game way beyond doubt with a nine goal to one second term to race to an 83 point lead at half time.
The second half was more of the same with Yarra Glen finishing the day strong with a nine goal last term and looking as though it is going to be one tough side to beat this season.
Best
Yarra Glen: B. James, K. Hudson, M. Ashton.
Kinglake: S. McMahon, D. Pywell, B. Brown.
Powelltown 13.12 (90) d Gembrook Cockatoo 10.10 (70)
Powelltown remains undefeated after a gutsy 20 point win over Gembrook which is yet to break through for a win this season.
For three quarters this game was very tight and it was Gembrook that held a narrow lead for the best part of those three quarters.
However, it was Powelltown’s willingness and desperation late in the last quarter that saw it score five goals to one to win by what was a very impressive 20 points.
Powelltown takes on Seville next week which is also undefeated in what could be a season defining game for both sides.
Best
Powelltown: L. Tindal, M. McArthur, K. Larsen.
Gembrook Cockatoo: R. Wilson, L. Tyrrell, C. Vernal.
Yea 12.10 (82) d Thornton Eildon 8.9 (57)
Yea certainly look as though it is on the improve after its second victory of the season.
This may not have been a pretty game as a spectacle but Yea was always in control.
Its backline was superb and restricted Thornton to just two goals in the first three quarters as it got out to a 40 point lead.
Thornton did hit the scoreboard in the last with six goals but it was never going to be enough as Yea booted four to win by 25 points and gain just a little bit more confidence.
Best
Yea: M. Berry, G. Wearne, N. Simpson.
Thornton Eildon: S. Parker, A. Marshall, L. Davison.
Yarra Junction 13.13 (91) d Alexandra 7.6 (48)
Yarra Junction got its first win of the season over what was a disappointing Alexandra.
Junction took control early with a seven goal to one first quarter and never looked threatened from there on.
In fact the scoreboard probably flattered Alex a little bit as Junction was a bit wayward as it could have blown the margin out a lot more if it was a little more efficient around the goal mouth.
Overall Junction will be rapt to win to get its season going while Alex will need to bounce back against Thornton Eildon next week.
Best
Yarra Junction: W. Robertson, M. Brown, E. Wadsworth.
Alexandra: J. Tossol, D. Toomey, W. Walker.
Under 18s
Upwey Tecoma 13.13 (91) d Belgrave 2.11 (23)
The margin may have been just four goals at half time but this game was always in Upwey’s keeping.
And just to make sure of it, it booted six goals to just three behinds in the third term to race to a 59 point lead at the last change.
The last quarter was pretty much a non event with Upwey scoring two goals to Belgrave’s one to win by 68 points in a workmanlike performance.
Best
Upwey Tecoma: L. Beacom, J. Waters, J. Robertson.
Belgrave: M. Ferguson, T. Somervaille, M. Donald.
Healesville 11.20 (86) d Warburon Millgrove 2.4 (16)
This was a pretty scrappy match but it was one that Healesville dominated throughout.
It held Warby scoreless in the first quarter while it managed 3.3.
Healesville stretched the lead out to seven goals by three quarter time.
The last quarter was a bit of a shocker for both sides.
Warby didn’t score while Healesville booted an incredibly inaccurate 3.10 which still saw it win, but it should have been by a lot greater margin.
Best
Healesville: R. Howard-Scales, J. Edmonds, R. Johnson.
Warburton Millgrove: M. Kocher, L. Spaulding, J. McIntosh.
Monbulk 26.15 (171) d Powelltown 0.0
Unfortunately sometimes there are games that one team is just dominant over another for the entirety of the four quarters and this was one such game.
Monbulk showed no mercy as it booted nine goals to nothing in the first quarter to set the tone for the day.
The second quarter saw better from Powelltown from a defensive point of view as it held Monbulk to three goals but it failed to score itself.
The second half was all Monbulk as they slammed on another 14 goals to win by 171 points and leave Powelltown scoreless in a game it would rather forget.
Best
Monbulk: B. James, K. Sas, T. Baumann (7 goals).
Powelltown: D. Thomas, M. Smith, D. Morrison.
Mount Evelyn 16.14 (110) d Yea 15.5 (95)
This was great game of Under 18 footy put on by two very good sides.
This game ebbed and flowed for the best part of four quarters with the winner still in doubt midway through the last quarter.
Mount Evelyn did have more of the ball and more opportunities which was the difference in the end but Yea was very good in front of goals which kept it well in touch throughout the match.
There was only 10 points in it at three quarter time in Mount Evelyn’s favour and the scene was set for a great last quarter.
Mount Evelyn booted 4.5 and probably should have iced the game sooner than it did but it did come away with what was a terrific 15 point victory.
Best
Mount Evelyn: M. Oultram, C. Blake, C. Glass.
Yea: H. Jarvie, R. Aldous, A. Buchanan.
Olinda Ferny Creek 14.14 (98) d Wandin 7.6 (48)
It was only a nine point margin at quarter time in Olinda’s favour but after that it was virtually all Olinda.
It booted five goals to two in the second term to go into the long break with a five goal lead.
Olinda stretched that lead to 49 point by three quarter time on the back of a four goal to one quarter.
The last quarter was an even affair but this was always Olinda’s day.
Best
Olinda Ferny Creek: B. Jones, B. Cooling, K. Foik.
Wandin: Z. Wyles, L. Jones, S. Kirk.
Emerald 10.11 (71) d Woori Yallock 4.4 (28)
For three quarters this was a really hard fought game with few goals being scored.
At three quarter time Emerald led by just two goals.
The last quarter saw Emerald all of a sudden find a heap of run that Woori just couldn’t combat.
It booted 4.7 and held Woori scoreless, in fact Woori didn’t score in the entire second half which is a testament to Emerald’s defence and a big reason why it came away with a 43 point victory.
Best
Emerald: M. Novotny, J. Turpin, M. Freeman.
Woori Yallock: A. Wells, M. Wells, T. Kear.
