RESIDENTS talked the talk and walked the walk earlier this month, walking through the bush to raise money for a Healesville community group.
The annual Healesville Interchurch Community Care Incorporated (HICCI) Walkathon was held on Saturday 3 May when about 40 walkers took off from Maroondah Reservoir, heading for Donnelley’s Weir three kilometres away.
Walkers took on the course in one, three or six kilometre routes, and raised money through the event to fund HICCI programs such as the Dinner at Darron’s weekly meal.
HICCI executive officer Kerri Goding said the event was a success and raised more than $2000 for the organisation.
She said that, as with last year’s event, local woman Sharon Martin topped the list of fundraisers, generating more than $1100 in sponsorship for the Walkathon.
Last year, Ms Martin raised a whopping $1500.
“I was very pleased with the Walkathon,” Ms Goding said.
“We’d like to thank everyone who did support our walkers, particularly all the businesses and people that sponsored Sharon.”
Ms Goding said that the annual Healesville event also drew participants from Yarra Glen, where HICCI recently set up an outreach service, and that the forecast rain even held off until after the event had finished.
She said that next year’s event would most likely take place in April, depending on where the Easter weekend falls.
