Wet weather conditions

The match between Alexandra and Seville was slogged out in the wet conditions. 155173_01

THE first really wet and foggy conditions greeted all on Saturday. Cool temperatures and slippery conditions made it a day of hard slogging football while the netball skills suffered in the fine rain.
Belgrave got its second win and have moved up to 8th position, while Healesville had a great win over Olinda and now share equal second with three other clubs.
Wandin flexed its muscles and sit second on percentage.
Upwey enjoyed a solid performance against Mount Evelyn, while Monbulk had a come-from-behind win to knock off Woori Yallock.
Gembrook now sit equal second with Kinglake after their win over Yarra Junction, while Alexandra continue to improve, beating Seville.
Yarra Glen are now two games clear on top and the only undefeated side.
Wandin sit one game clear on top of the A Grade netball; Seville and Yarra Glen share top spot but meet each other next week for what will be the game of the round.
DIVISION 1
SENIORS
Belgrave 9.15(69) d Emerald 9.6(60)
This was a game that Emerald needed to win to stay in touch with the teams on the lower end of the ladder. Emerald started well, kicking four goals straight to 2.5 from Belgrave. Another 2 goals to 1 saw Emerald take a lead of 11 points into the main break. Belgrave regrouped at half-time and had a 31-point turnaround in the third to take a 16-point lead at three-quarter time. Emerald kicked 3.1 to 2 straight in the last but it still was not enough and they will be disappointed that they let this one slip.
Belgrave Best: P. Gough (4 goals), M. Johnson, W. Carlyle (2 goals), J. Pearce, C. Power, D. Loosz.
Emerald Best: S. Paull, M. Steer, C. Thomsen, Michael Dompietro, L. McKenna, B. Moloney.
Healesville 7.14(56) d Olinda Ferny Creek 6.6(42)
Olinda started like they left off last week, kicking 3.2 to 101 taking a 13-point lead into the first break. A two goal to three quarter reduced their lead to 12 at half-time. Healesville pulled out all stops in the third and the defence stood tall as they held Olinda goalless while kicking 2.6 in the third. Was indirect kicking going to come back and haunt them? They should have been more than 5 points in front at three-quarter time. Centre breaks were what one it for them in the end as they managed to hold back a determined Olinda and ran away with a 14-point win.
Healesville Best: D. Anderson (1 goal), N. Mende, A. Davies, M. Jeffery, M. Anson, D. Plozza.
Olinda Ferny Creek Best: L. Hill, M. Wright (1 goal), K. Currie, D. Wilson, B. Walter (3 goals), N. Syme.
Wandin 21.17(143) d Warburton Millgrove 6.9(45)
Wandin never gave Warburton any look in on Saturday. With Michael Fowkes and Jarrod Bayliss kicking five goals, it was going to make it a long day at the office. Wandin started off well with a 6 goal first quarter. It was the second that spelled the result for Warburton with Wandin, kicking 7 goals to 1 and a comfortable lead of 61 points at half time. The final result could have been more than 98 points if Wandin had kicked straight.
Wandin Best: J. Bayliss (5 goals), R. Ross (1 goal), M. Polkinghorne (2 goals), J. Ladner, M. Fowkes (5 goals), M. O’Donohue.
Warburton Millgrove Best: L. Barnard, T. Walker, J. Mullan, T. McKail, D. Bedggood, J. Iacono.
Upwey Tecoma 14.18(102) d Mount Evelyn 10.13(73)
Mount Evelyn – like others over the weekend – took the early lead but then were run over by a team that was more determined and driven to win. Upwey kicked 8 goals to 1 in the second and a 41 half-time lead to seal the fate of Mount Evelyn early. Mount Evelyn outscored Upwey in the last half kicking 6.9 to Upwey’s 4.9 but it was never going to be enough to claw back the end result.
Upwey Tecoma Best: A. Clifford (2 goals), R. Peterson, S. Mitchell (2 goals), T. Robinson (1 goal), K. Hinton, J. Hackett (1 goal).
Mount Evelyn Best: R. Cowan (1 goal), D. Kift, A. Chalkley (2 goals), D. Maynard, G. Gosland, D. Duarte.
Monbulk 10.6(66) d Woori Yallock 8.15(63)
This game was tight all day. Jordy Williams and Ben Monkhorst were back in the team and was surely going to bring some stability back to the forward line. It was all tied up at quarter time and it was game on. Monbulk took a slim 4-point lead at half-time, kicking 2.2 to Woori’s 1.4. Woori kicked back on the third, kicking 3.5 to 1.1. Monbulk rallied in the last and kicked 5 goals straight to Woori’s 2.3 which gave Monbulk a heart stopping 3-point victory.
Monbulk Best: D. Ward, B. Hicken, J. Mohr, C. Sharpe (1 goal), D. Werts, M. Langworthy (4 goals).
Woori Yallock Best: J. Williams (1 goal), S. Kennedy (1 goal), M. Lowe, J. Williamson, H. Smith, K. Thompson.

DIVISION 2
SENIORS
Gembrook Cockatoo 7.18(60) d Yarra Junction 6.3(39)
Gembrook sit second on the ladder by percentage after a good come from behind win. The result should have been greater but again bad kicking could have spelt danger but they were good enough in their defensive line to hold Yarra Junction out. Junction held the lead up to half time and was 13 points up at the main break. Gembrook held them scoreless in the third, while kicking 2.9 in the third. The result should have been greater but Gembrook did enough to come away with another four points.
Gembrook-Cockatoo Best: M. Maddison, D. Scott, A. Mitchell (1 goal), S. Martin, B. Fenton, E. Tomlin.
Yarra Junction Best: F. D’Agostino, E. Wadsworth, Q. Hodgkinson, S. Williams, M. Duke.
Kinglake 12.14(86) d Powelltown 6.7(43)
Kinglake had what would be thought by a few as an unexpected win on Saturday. Eight scoring shots to three gave them a handy 20-point lead at quarter time. Another 3.5 to 3.2 in the second made little difference to the lead at half-time. The game was a bit of a game between the back lines in the second and third quarters with scoring being even and Kinglake only increased their lead to 24 points at the three-quarter time break. This was not out of Powelltown’s reach at all. Kinglake played a better brand of footy in the last, holding Powelltown goalless while adding 3 to their score. A good solid win in the end.
Kinglake Best: R. Mallison (4 goals), M. Rowlands (1 goal), A. Whelan (1 goal), T. Thone-Kain, M. McAllister, B. Wilkinson.
Powelltown Best: S. Sanders, N. Moody, P. Miller, D. Dyer, D. Edgeworth (1 goal), M. McArthur.
Alexandra 8.8(56) d Seville 7.11(53)
Alexandra also surprised a few on the weekend with a gutsy 3-point win over Seville. Alexandra were never headed all day and held a healthy 24-point lead at half time. Seville outscored Alexandra in the second half kicking 6.7 to 3.4 and you would think 13 scoring shots to 7 would have seen Seville get home but inaccuracy was again as was the story over the weekend was their undoing. Alexandra and Seville now sit on four wins each after Round 7.
Alexandra Best: C. Heaslip, B. Wallace, C. Tranter, M. Coombs (2 goals), D. Roper.
Seville Best: G. Annowsky, R. Davis (1 goal), A. Wind, B. Penwill, J. Bourke-Finn, D. Groen.
Yarra Glen 12.11(83) d Yea 5.10(40)
This game was an opportunity for Yea to get themselves one game clear of the others below them on the ladder and keep them in touch with the top part of the ladder. On the other hand, it was a chance for Yarra Glen to give them some breathing space coming into rounds 8 and 9 when Seville and Gembrook are their opponents. Yea got a good start kicking the first 2 goals of the game but then Yarra Glen kicked into gear kicking the next 4 to take a 13-point lead into qtr time. Yarra Glen played a consistent four quarters of football in slippery, wet conditions coming away with a 43-point win.
Yarra Glen Best: L. Hoffman (1 goal), K. Hudson (1 goal), J. Smith (1 goal), G. Filsell, C. Tait, D. Hurley (1 goal).
Yea Best: B. Cunningham (1 goal), D. Evans, A. Hobbs (2 goals), P. Evans, R. Aldous, J. Marasco.
Thornton Eildon: Bye.

UNDER 18s
Upwey Tecoma 10.14(74) d Kinglake 4.6(30)
Upwey travelled to foggy Kinglake on Saturday and came away with a 44-point win. Upwey kicked 4 goals to nil in the first quarter. Kinglake remained goalless up to half time while Upwey had 7 on the board. Kinglake certainly came out after half time and played a better brand of football kicking 4.4 to Upwey’s 3.11. Kinglake certainly helped keep the final result to a minimum with good defence and pressure on the ball carrier for Upwey in the second half.
Upwey-Tecoma Best: N. Horne, T. Cairns, T. Edyvane (3 goals), L. Hughes, B. Watson (1 goal), A. Milner (1 goal).
Kinglake Best: B. White (2 goals), L. White (1 goal), J. Harward (1 goal), L. McDonald, A. Caine, B. Hamer.
Emerald 14.10(94) d Warburton Millgrove 4.6(30)
Emerald and Warburton were on the same points on the ladder leading up to today and a win was important for both teams. Warburton had a good start, taking an early 7-point lead at quarter time. Emerald got their kicking boots on in the second, kicking 5 goals to 2 and reversing the lead in their favour by 18 points. Warburton failed to kick another goal after the first quarter and Emerald ran away with a 64-point win.
Emerald best: R. Hall, B. Pepi, B. Wood (7 goals), T. Thomsen, B. Wilson (1 goal), J. Webb.

Monbulk-Seville 9.14(68) d Woori Yallock-Powelltown 5.3(33)

Woori-Powelltown worked hard but could not manage to penetrate the defence of Monbulk-Seville and did not manage to score another goal until the last when they outscored Monbulk-Seville kicking 3.1 to 2.1.
